    Thelma Chicas Biography:

    I was born in El Salvador in Central America. In 1991, due to the Civil War in my country, I moved to San Francisco, California. I am now married and have a twenty one year old daughter who is a student at USF. I graduated from Polk Community College with honors in 2005 and in 2010, I obtained my Bachelor degree in Science from Florida Southern College. After substituting my mentor in one of her classes, I discovered my passion for teaching and decided to pursue my Master Degree in Education. I received my Master Degree in Curriculum and Instruction with concentration in Foreign Language Education from the University of South Florida in 2013.

    I am currently working on my Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership at Florida Southern College. I am planning to graduate in the spring of 2019. I hold a teacher certification K-12 in Foreign Language Education; IB Spanish Certification and AP Spanish Certification. My work experience includes 10 years teaching Spanish at different levels: Elementary School, Middle School, High School, IB Spanish, AP Spanish Language and Culture, Spanish Literature; Spanish for Business and Spanish at the College Level.

    I have participated in many conferences and workshops related to Foreign Language Education: La Cosecha (Dual Language Education), ACTFL (The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages). My work experience at Polk State College includes: Program Coordinator, Foreign Language Professor, Professor Spanish Honors Program, and Advisor for the International Circle (Because Everyone is International). My teaching philosophy is to provide my students with the necessary tools for learning, hands on activities, multiple opportunities, instructional technology, and the application of strategies and educational methods proven effective in foreign language education. My Main focus is to embrace ethnicity, culture and diversity in a caring learning environment and to grant the personal attention necessary to help my students achieve their educational goals.

    My extracurricular activities include: Member of the Hispanic Heritage Month Committee, Member of the Cultural Affairs Committee, and AP Spanish Language Examiner for the College Board. Also, dancing, cooking and spending time with my family.

  6. GUADELOUPE - 2017 (FULL)

    Overview: Students will gain experience in Environmental Sciences while visiting Guadeloupe. Polk State students will work with student from the University of Antilles to collect water samples using robotic remote controlled vehicles, analyze the samples and record data.

    SCHOLARSHIPS

    GUADELOUPE – Environmental Science Program

    Deadline: August 1, 2017. Partial scholarships available towards the Polk State College Guadeloupe Environmental Science study abroad program, November 2017.

    SCHOLARSHIP DESCRIPTION: (9) Award recipients will receive scholarships for the science study abroad program to the Guadeloupe, November 16 – 25, 2017. Recipients must take BSC1311C, EVR1001C, or OCE2001C with the study abroad program and have it count towards their degree. Award values range from $500 – $1400 depending on financial need. Passport fee, course tuition and spending money is not included.

    • Take one of these courses, EVR1000C, BSC1311C or OCE2001C with the study abroad program.
    • Academic standing of 2.0 or higher.
    • Participant must write a 300-500 word essay  regarding why they wish to receive the scholarship and how this trip will benefit their life and career.
    • Fill out both forms attached below & essay and send to ksimpson@polk.edu or drop off at LTB1267 by August 1, 2017.

    Things to Consider: Walking 3-5 miles per day, some travel will be in boats (bring Dramamine for motion sensitivity), swimming and snorkeling may be required (Practice ALL Gear) and hiking up steep inclines.

  7. ENGLAND - 2017 - CLOSED (FULL)

    Overview: Students will work with archeologist David Jacques in Amesbury, England at the Blick Mead dig site. You will also tour Stonehenge, Salisbury, Old Sarum, the British Museum and the Tower of London.

    • Will be sharing a room with one other participant
    • Days will be long due to dig site work and tours
