Polk State’s International Education Week Events Include Guest Lecture by Stonehenge Researcher David Jacques

Posted on by Polk Newsroom

Polk State College will mark International Education Week with a slate of events on both its Lakeland and Winter Haven campuses, Nov. 11-14.

International Education Week is a joint initiative between the U.S. Department of State and U.S. Department of Education. The idea is to promote programs that prepare American students for a global environment, and to encourage foreign students to study in the U.S.

Polk State offers its students an ever-increasing array of international opportunities. In recent months, the College sent its second group of exchange students to Polytech Marseille, a French university. Students also recently traveled to the Bahamas, where they completed science field studies, and South Africa, where they attended an international honors conference.

Fittingly enough, during International Education Week, Polk State Scholarobotics Academy students will be in Strasbourg, France, to present at the 3rd annual RAMSES (Robotic Assisted Microsurgical & Endoscopic Society) Symposium.

Back here in Polk County, the College’s International Education Week events include fairs on upcoming study-abroad trips and a lecture by former Polk State Fulbright Professor David Jacques.

Jacques, now a senior research fellow in archaeology at the University of Buckingham in the United Kingdom, has done extensive research on Stonehenge, a prehistoric and ever-mysterious monument in England. His work has landed him in a variety of archaeology-related publications, such as Current Archaeology, and on the BBC’s Flying Archaeologist television series.

During his Polk State lectures — scheduled for both the Lakeland and Winter Haven campuses — he will discuss whether Stonehenge is actually thousands of years older than previously thought.

His lectures are free and open to the public.
