The Polk State College Construction Institute grew out of the College’s experiences with a successful Department of Labor Training for Manufactured Construction (TRAMCON) grant. During the term of the grant, over 1,000 participants received construction-related training through Polk State College. The region’s continued high demand for skilled employees in the construction and infrastructure sectors resulted in the College creating the Polk State College Construction Institute.

The Construction Institute offers focused training opportunities to meet the needs of the construction industry. Additionally, the Institute provides a career pathway for the over 500 students who participate in the Polk County Public Schools Construction Career Academies annually.

Construction Institute training considers the range and complexity of today’s construction projects and gives students the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed regardless of the type of project or construction. Construction workers today can find themselves dealing with building materials and construction situations beyond the traditional wood frame and masonry structures. Understanding steel, prestressed, precast, tilt-up, prefabricated components, and composite materials are critical as is a deep understanding of new construction methods, technologies, and regulatory requirements.  Polk State College provides today’s workers with industry training to be productive and competitive in today’s construction projects.
