Lakeland Gateway to College Collegiate High School to Hold Info Sessions

Posted on by Polk Newsroom

Polk State Lakeland Gateway to College Collegiate High School will host informational sessions for students interested in attending the public charter school, which is an academic alternative for students who want to graduate and transition to college.

The informational sessions are scheduled for Tuesday, April 3, and Tuesday, April 17, at 6:30 p.m. in the LTB Auditorium on the Polk State Lakeland Campus, 3425 Winter Lake Road.

Applications for the 2018-2019 school year will be accepted online from April 4 to April 27.

Lakeland Gateway to College Collegiate serves students in grades 11 and 12 who have earned at least 10 credits required for high school graduation. Students can expect to receive a standard high school diploma, at least nine college credits, a plan for transitioning to college or work, and skills for success.

And while many students earn at least nine college credits, many earn more, up to a Polk State Associate in Arts degree. Lakeland Gateway to College Collegiate graduated 64 students in 2017. The average student in that class earned 27 college credits and 16 students graduated with an Associate in Arts degree.

The school is a replicated model of the established Gateway to College National Network and is recognized by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Lakeland Gateway to College Collegiate does not receive a school grade from the Florida Department of Education as per its charter, but it does receive a school improvement rating, which was “commendable” for the 2016-2017 school year. This is the highest rating achievable and Lakeland Gateway to College Collegiate was the only school in Polk County to achieve this status.

In addition to blended learning and wrap around services focused on improving academic outcomes, students also have opportunities to participate in organizations that will contribute to their development into well-rounded individuals such as the National Honor Society, Student Government Association, Leadership Council, and Future Business Leaders of America. They may also participate in standard high school activities including homecoming, prom, and grad bash.
