During the fall 2011 semester, approximately 40 Polk State College reading and/or writing preparatory students began participation in the Townsend Press Reading Scholarship Contest. Townsend Press sponsors the contest to help students reap the benefits of regular reading. To be eligible for participation, students must be currently enrolled in a preparatory reading or writing class.

Townsend Press provides a variety of books for the contest, from abridged versions of classics to modern collections of inspiring stories. After reading a set of 10 books, students earn $100. If a student reads a second set of 10books, the student is awarded another $100. Reading a third set of 10 books earns the student an additional $100 award. In other words, students can earn up to $300 in this contest – simply for reading motivating and engaging books.

Polk State College is proud to announce the first winner of the contest, Michael Price. Michael quickly and eagerly read 10 books, completing his first set of 10 on Dec. 11, 2011.   We are excited to continue encouraging our students to enjoy all the benefits of reading this spring through this wonderful program.
