Events Celebrate Art, Music, and Students

Posted on by Polk Newsroom

October is filled with art and music events at Polk State College, from this weekend’s “Music from Around the World,” to upcoming Arts Day at Polk State.

On Sunday, Oct. 15, the Music Department’s choirs and orchestra will perform music from around the world, from African and Serbian folk songs, to contemporary Jewish and old American dance tunes.

The concert, which will feature Polk State’s Concert Choir, Orchestra, Dolce Fiamma Women’s Choir, and Burgundy and the Pips, will start at 2:30 p.m. at the Polk State Winter Haven Fine Arts Theatre.

Music Director Michelle Manzi called this year’s concert revamped, especially because it will be debuting the Polk State Orchestra, which the College has been without for a year.

“It will be a very exciting, diverse program and an opportunity for the community to experience the new Orchestra and great talent we have here at Polk State,” Manzi said.

The concert is free for students, faculty, and staff with valid Polk State I.D.s, and $7 for the public. Tickets are available online at polk.edu/the-arts/box-office.

Gallery Exhibits

After a music-filled Sunday, kick off Monday with the start of two gallery exhibits: the Student Art Exhibition at the Polk State Winter Haven Fine Arts Gallery and the Capturing Cultures Photography Exhibit at the Polk State Lakeland Art Gallery.

Both exhibits will be on display Oct. 16 through Dec. 8 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Thursday. The exhibits are free and open to the public.

The Lakeland exhibit will have a reception and award ceremony on Nov. 16 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The Winter Haven exhibit will have a reception and award ceremony on Oct. 19 during Arts Day at Polk State.

Arts Day

Arts Day at Polk State will continue the celebration of The Arts and Humanities Month by showcasing student music and art in a day-long event of performances, exhibits, and the reception and award ceremony for the Student Art Exhibition.

Student music ensembles will perform from 11 a.m. to noon on the Polk State Winter Haven Student Center Lawn.

The reception and awards ceremony for the Student Art Exhibition will take place from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Polk State Winter Haven Fine Arts Gallery.

“Arts Day is really a celebration of the students and their work,” Program Coordinator Nancy Lozell said. “We invite everyone to come out and celebrate with us.”
