Polk State’s Courtlann Dixon Thomas has received certification as a Developmental Education Specialist from the Kellogg Institute for the Training and Certification of Developmental Educators.

The Kellogg program is the nation’s longest running advanced training program for developmental educators and learning skills specialists.  The program consists of an intensive, four-week summer residency and a supervised practicum that participants conduct at their home institutions to implement their newfound techniques.

Thomas is the College’s director of academic support services. Her practicum topic was, “Implementing a Common Discourse for College Success: Building an Instructional Toolkit and Common Experience Teaching Program for Adjunct Faculty.”

The certification is awarded through the Kellogg Institute, in conjunction with Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C.
