Polk State Hosting Free Events on Possibilities of 3-D Printing

Posted on by Polk Newsroom

The possibilities of 3-D printing will be the topic of three special events this month at Polk State College.

In 3-D printing, digital files are “printed” into three-dimensional objects — anything from rocket engine parts for NASA, to prosthetic body parts, to food and clothing. The technology used to be mainly for scientists and engineers, but now it’s gone mainstream. Anyone can order a 3-D printer online and, within a few days, turn their home into a mini factory.

Isaac Budmen, a Syracuse, N.Y.-based artist, designer and inventor, has logged thousands of hours on his own 3-D printer and he’s the co-author of The Book on 3-D Printing, a how-to guide for using the technology.

Budmen is currently working as an artist with the Digital Media Lab at The Metropolitan Museum of Art and his 3-D printed artwork has been featured at the London Science Museum and other venues.

During his two-day visit to Polk State College, Budmen will introduce audiences to the possibilities of 3-D printing, sharing examples of how 3-D printing is being used today and discussing its future uses. At his events at the Polk State Lake Wales Arts Center, he will give a demonstration using the College’s 3-D printer.
