Polk State Enhances Offerings and Schedule at Northeast Polk Location

Posted on by Polk Newsroom

Polk State College is streamlining its schedule of classes offered at Ridge Community High School to better serve the northeast Polk community.

For nearly five years, the College has offered courses at the Davenport location, but class start times had varied widely. Beginning in the fall semester, classes at Ridge will begin at either 3 p.m. or 6 p.m.

The adjusted schedule will make it easier for students to plan work shifts, childcare and any variety of work-life demands around their classwork, said Martha Santiago, dean of academic affairs on the Winter Haven campus. Additionally, the new schedule will better serve area employers, who sought a more convenient way for their employees to balance work while still advancing educationally.

“We heard the call of the community and we responded,” said Santiago. “Polk State is always looking out for the people of northeast Polk, and we listen to the community and businesspeople. With this new schedule at Ridge, we are making it easier for students to get their associate degrees from Polk, and there is no need to travel anywhere else.”

In addition to streamlining the schedule, more classes have been added to the Ridge lineup, and Santiago said more class offerings are yet to come.

“This is just the beginning,” she said.

The adjusted schedule at Ridge is just the latest example of Polk State’s commitment to meeting student need. The College offers early-morning, evening and weekend classes, as well as a growing slate of online offerings, all with an eye to helping students balance their other commitments without sacrificing higher education.

Classes at Ridge begin Sept. 10.
