With the recent news of the State University System implementing a mandatory two-week period of remote instruction due to the coronavirus (COVID-19), Polk State College provides this update to clarify that the College remains open at this time per the recommendation of the Florida Commissioner of Education.
The State University System’s directive to universities to transition classes online does not include state colleges. Per the Florida Commissioner of Education, the COVID-19 risk remains low at Florida’s 28 state colleges and K-12 schools. Upon the recommendation of the Florida Department of Education, the Florida College System’s 28 institutions remain open at this time.
The College continues to emphasize the importance of following the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s guidelines:
- If you are sick, stay home. (Please inform your instructors or supervisor).
- Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
- Carry and use alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
- Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.
- Monitor your symptoms.
The College’s custodial staff continues to clean and sanitize across the College’s six locations throughout the day and evening with hospital- and high-grade disinfecting cleaners. Additionally, alcohol-based hand sanitizer is available in dispensers throughout all College sites. However, the College highly encourages individuals to practice consistent washing of hands with soap and water.
