Posted on by Polk Newsroom

The application period for entry into Polk State College’s Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program is now open.

The program was recently reaccredited through the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs. It has successfully held the accreditation since 2011. The application window will last through Aug. 31.

Diagnostic medical sonography is the specific imaging modality that uses special equipment to direct high-frequency sound waves into the patient’s body. A sonographer is a highly skilled professional who operates equipment that collects reflected echoes and forms an image that may be recorded, transmitted, or photographed for interpretation and diagnosis by a physician.

Polk State’s program leverages the professional experience of its instructors and state-of-the-art technology to prepare aspiring sonographers for success. All program instructors are sonographers registered in multiple specialties. The instructors teach in a training lab with the same professional-grade equipment students will use when they enter the workforce.

The Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program’s curriculum is 77 credit hours, including 59 credits for Program Core Requirements. The two-year program awards an Associate of Science degree.

Program graduates are eligible to take the national register exams administered by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS). Polk State Diagnostic Medical Sonography graduates recently posted a 100% licensure pass rate.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median salary for a diagnostic medical sonographer in May 2022 was $81,350. The number of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers in the U.S. is expected to increase by 10% from 2021 to 2031 – faster than the average occupation.
