Polk State EMT graduate earns congressional recognition

One Polk State College Emergency Medical Technology Certificate graduate’s efforts have now reached the highest levels of the U.S. government.

Gustavo Mora, the 2025 Polk County Fire Rescue EMT of the Year, was recently recognized by U.S. Rep. Scott Franklin with a certificate. Mora said it was the most important recognition he’s ever received.

“Your dedication, professionalism and commitment to public safety reflect the highest standards of service,” the certificate reads. “Through your efforts, you have made a meaningful impact on the Polk County community.”

Polk State highlighted Mora’s accomplishments in December after he was recognized by the Polk County Board of County Commissioners in October for life-saving efforts. Mora led a team of emergency responders and delivered Krystal O’Connell’s baby Dominick. In that case, the umbilical cord was prolapsed, cutting the baby’s oxygen supply and making it a complex childbirth. After delivering the baby, Mora successfully performed lifesaving CPR.

A 2024 graduate of the EMT Program, Mora is currently pursuing his Polk State Associate in Science degree in Emergency Medical Services (EMS). Mora began his tenure with Polk County Fire Rescue in May 2025. He hopes to one day work as an administrator in the field.

Mora spent 15 years as a firefighter and paramedic in his native Costa Rica before moving to the U.S. in 2017 with his wife and two children. Forced to start his education from scratch to get back into the emergency medical services field, Mora became a U.S. citizen, earned a general education degree and enrolled at Polk State in 2022.

“This mention not only symbolizes the greatness of this country that recognizes people for their effort but it represents a form of appreciation for those who work to serve others without expecting anything in return,” Mora exclaimed. “For both me and my family, it’s a great achievement.”
