Original post 3/26/2024 8:39 a.m. A small grease fire early morning Tuesday has closed the two-story student center in the Lakeland Academic Center (LAC) at Polk State College. The rest of the LAC building is open.

The closure includes rooms 1231, 1235, 1234, 1242, and 1243, as well as the Student Activities & Leadership Office and cafeteria. The two-story student center is expected to reopen Tuesday; however, the cafeteria will remain closed this week. The cafeteria is expected to reopen on Monday, April 1.

Employees of the cafeteria quickly attempted to extinguish the fire and called 9-1-1 before Polk County Fire Rescue arrived on the scene.

There is minor smoke damage and smoke continues to be cleared from the student center. No other parts of the LAC building were affected. No one was injured.
