Construction improvements to SR 542/Dundee Road from 1st Street to East of Buckeye Loop Road start Oct. 29

Travel to Polk State Winter Haven Campus from Dundee Road may be slightly disrupted beginning Oct. 29, but it’s all in the name of progress.

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) begins a roadway widening project on SR 542/Dundee Road from 1st Street to east of Buckeye Loop Road at the end of this month.

The project will widen the roadway, adding additional travel lanes in some sections and a center turn lane in others. Sidewalks and bike lanes will be added to the full length of the project, traffic signals will be upgraded, and two mid-block crosswalks will be constructed. All improvements are intended to accommodate increased traffic volumes along the roadway, while improving safety for cyclists, pedestrians, and drivers.

Roadway crews will work during daytime and evening hours and drivers should expect traffic lane shifts, temporary side-street closures, and vehicular and pedestrian detours. Lane closures associated with this project are prohibited between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. which should mitigate some of the traffic impacts.

Drivers are asked to be alert for construction crews and watch for detour signs. Additionally, to avoid the construction zone, drivers should seek alternate routes to campus and to plan for additional drive time. Construction is expected to be complete in Fall 2020.
