Winter Haven Campus Provost is Named

Dr. Sharon Miller is Provost for the Winter Haven campus03/20/2008Polk Community College has named Dr. Sharon Miller to be Provost for the Winter Haven campus. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Social and Behavioral Sciences from the University of South Florida, a Master’s degree in Specific Learning Disabilities from Nova Southeastern University, and a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in School Psychology from USF.

Dr. Miller has spent 26 years in education with 20 of them in an administrative capacity.

Since 1999, Dr. Miller has served as Dean at Hillsborough Community College, where she has had extensive experience in coordinating a wide variety of credit and noncredit programs and services.

Dr. Miller has also served as an instructor at HCC teaching classes in psychology, education and study skills. Her other duties there included Honors Program Review, SACS Reaffirmation Committee, College-wide Book Discussion Leader, Service Learning Coordinator, and Grant Writer.

She has conducted research on African-American students admitted to gifted education programs in the Hillsborough Schools as well as research on African-American families of children with developmental disabilities.

During her career, Dr. Miller has successfully obtained over $10 million in state and federal grants, including Adult Education, Family Literacy, Title III and College Reach Out. 

PCC President Eileen Holden said she will be “an excellent addition to our staff.” Dr. Holden added that supervisors and colleagues at HCC “describe Dr. Miller as a collaborative, experienced, and student-centered administrator who is passionate about the community college mission.”

            Dr. Miller has been active in many civic and community organizations in the greater Tampa area including literacy programs, Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, College Reach-Out Program (CROP) and Migrant Farm Worker grant programs.

            She has two grown children. Her daughter, Shiva, is attending Spelman College in Atlanta. Her son, Rodney, is a Marine Reservist.
