"We are extremely pleased to have successfully secured all of the SUCCEED Florida grants for which we applied,” said PCC President Eileen Holden. “These funds will allow us to provide academic programs and services to support the workforce needs of Polk County. I appreciate the efforts of the members of the Polk County legislative delegation who helped to secure the funding for PCC to offer these critical high-demand programs.”

In addition, SUCCEED Florida awards totaling $469,000 went to Polk County Public Schools. PCC will be cooperating with the school system to implement these new programs:

Educator Preparation Institute (EPI)

The grant will be used to increase the capacity of PCC’s undergraduate program designed to produce more teachers in the county. The Educator Preparation Institute is an accelerated training program that educates newly hired teachers who did not major in education. EPI allows college graduates with bachelor’s degrees to become qualified teachers in less time than is required for a traditional education degree.

State funds will be used to expand PCC’s EPI program from its current enrollment of 150 participants to over 200 participants during the 2007-2008 school year. PCC’s EPI program is one of the largest in the state. Funds will be used for items that will directly affect students, including personnel, professional development, scholarships and instructional equipment.
