PCC
Soccer Team is Ranked #1
08/28/2007: Polk
Community College’s
Women’s Soccer Team
is really
excelling.
The team is ranked # 1 in
pre-season polls. They recently participated in the Shelton State
Classic Tournament at
Tuscaloosa Alabama
and they shut out all three teams they faced.
Six women's teams from the south participated. PCC played: Hines
C.C. of Mississippi- last year's
Mississippi
regional champions, Shelton State
C.C.- last season's Region 7 Champion and #3 in the 2007
preseason polls, and Darton CC of Georgia. Darton was runner up
in region 17 to Young Harris who went on to become national
champions last season. They are ranked # 9 in pre-season this
year.
PCC played Hines Friday afternoon, defeating them soundly with a
score of
9-0.
Five
different players scored: Danielle MaYer and
Christina Mintz, each had two goals and the following players had
one goal each: Martha Taboas, Adi Alvarado, Kristen Vollmer, Kerri
Ann Brown, and Kim Newsome.
On Saturday, PCC played Shelton State, who knocked PCC out of the
District Tournament last year. Shelton State had a pre-season
ranking of # 3. PCC dominated the field and ended the game with
a 7-0 victory.
Rachel Butler of Mulberry had 2 goals, other scorers with 1
goal each were: Yuridia Aguilar, Taylor Ocasio, Nicole Bowen,
Kristin Bailey and Danielle Mayer.
The Sunday game was against Darton C.C.,
a team PCC had never beaten in the past four years.
It was a real barn burner. Darton C.C. or Young
Harris C.C. have represented district F in the National Tournament
the last four years. PCC
prevailed with a 1-0 victory with a goal from Kristin Bailey with
just under 4 minutes remaining in the game.
In the pre-season
polls, PCC is ranked # 1. The coaches will be voting again next
week to start this year's polls.
