Music, Cultural, History, Dance Part of 2nd Annual Hispanic Heritage Month

Polk Community College will celebrate 2nd Annual Hispanic Heritage Month with several free events on both PCC campuses that feature music, food, education and culture.

            The activities are being coordinated by a committee chaired by Sheila Rios. The PCC group has received tremendous community support from area merchants and from the University of South Florida Lakeland, which is co-sponsoring the events.

            Here’s the schedule:

            Hispanic Heritage Month Kickoff- Sept. 20, 11:30 am to 1:30 pm outside the LLC building on the Lakeland campus. The event will feature Latin music and salsa dancers from Salsa Caliente Dance Studio, who will conduct introduction to Latin dancing classes. Food supplied by Las Americas Bakery will include: mini grounded beef patties, chicken and pineapple skewers, mini Cuban sandwiches, mini guava pastries.  Door prizes will be awarded.   

            Hispanic Heritage Month Panel Discussion –  Sept. 27, 4-5:30 p.m. LLC Auditorium Room 2188. The title of the event is “Promoting Community Success - The Influence of Leadership, Education and Economic Growth in the Hispanic Community.” Dr. Nathan Thomas, USF Lakeland’s, Director of Diversity, will moderate a panel consisting of business, industry and educational leaders discussing topics related to minority access to higher education.

The panel will include: Rick Garcia, President Gulf Coast Avionics; Martha Santiago, Polk County Education; and the following individuals from USF Lakeland: Marco Aguilar, Undergraduate Student in Technology; Karla Delgado, Graduate Student in Engineering; Maria Jimenez, Graduate Student in Counselor Education; Dr. Alice Murray, Associate Vice President of Administrative and Academic Support Services, and Eve Underhill, Director of Human Resources.

          Hispanic Heritage Month Luncheon- Oct. 3, 11:30 am to 1:30 p.m. in WST-126 on the Winter Haven campus. This “Invitation Only” event will featuring food, music and dance. The theme is: “Tapestry of Cultures.” Keynote speakers are: Martha Santiago, member of PCC’s District Board of Trustees, and Teresa Martinez, host of PGTV’s Comunidad Viva. A flamenco piece will be performed by the American Gypsies. Spanish dishes provided by caterer Lakeland Bagels.

Hispanic Heritage Month Scavenger HuntSept. 18 through Oct. 13 on both PCC campuses. Clues will be posted at various locations around campus in the form of banners. These banners with contain a fact about a Hispanic person and the name of the person underneath. The idea is to expose students to some of the people of Hispanic descent who have made a successful contribution to society. Those students wishing to participate can pick up a test and answer sheet form at the libraries on either campus. A prize basket worth over $100 featuring various Hispanic items and gift certificates to local restaurants will be presented on each campus the winner(s).

Hispanic Films and Cultural Discussions A month long showing of Latin films, including dramas, comedies and documentaries. Snacks will be provided and discussions will be held.           OTHER HISPANIC HERITAGE EVENTS-

·        Food- through the month.  Chartwells will feature Hispanic dishes each Wednesday from Sept. 20 to Oct. 11 at the Student Center on each campus.

·        Oct. 7- City of Lakeland Hispanic Festival Celebration at Munn Park – PCC’s Hispanic Heritage Month Committee will participate along with Student Services staff.

·        Oct. 7- Polk Museum of Art Exhibition – Women Only! A guided tour highlighting Hispanic artist – Amalia Mesa-Bains. The Polk Museum of Art is collaborating with PCC to bring some 30 selected students to see the exhibit
