PCC
Hosts Session On Feb. 24 To Provide Financial Aid Information &
Assistance
Polk Community College
Joins With Polk County Schools And State of Florida In Free
“College Goal” Program
02/06/2007: Polk
Community College and
the Polk County Schools will be participating in a statewide
initiative that will provide Financial Aid information and help
high school students and their parents who attend a free
workshop called College Goal Sunday.
The event will be
held in PCC’s Student Center on the Winter Haven campus on
Saturday, Feb. 24, 1- 3 p.m. A $500 scholarship that can be used
at any college will be given away to someone attending the
session.
Financial aid
counselors will be assisting high school students in 40 counties
throughout the state. “We realized our state had to take steps to
help with the process,” said David Armstrong, Florida’s Chancellor
of Community Colleges. He expects the event will draw 2,000
high-school students, most from low-income families and many the
first in their families to attend college.
Millions of
dollars are available in student aid, but many parents are
confused and discouraged by the forms. One of the biggest barriers
that college bound low-income and minority students is the eye
glazing federal form, Free Application for Federal Student Aid,
also known as FAFSA. Students who show up for the College Goal
event at PCC will get help filling it out.
