Talented Students Are Art Show Winners

04/15/2008The talents of Polk Community College’s art students are showcased in nearly 300 pieces of art on exhibit during April in the Fine Arts Gallery, Winter Haven campus. Their work comprises the 2008 Student Art Show and Competition. A spectrum of high quality artwork will be on display in the Gallery through April 25.

The Fine Arts Gallery is open weekdays from 10 am to noon. Admission is free.

Ribbons are awarded in six categories and Best of Show. 

BEST OF SHOW went to Ed Nievas of Winter Haven for his photography entitled, “Stairway into Oddity.

BEST OF DRAWING and BEST OF WATERCOLOR awards were both won by Lindsey Muscatello of Lakeland. Her drawing composition is entitled  “Althea” and her watercolor is called, “Tori.”

BEST OF GRAPHICS was won by Matthew Trout of Lakeland for digital photography entitled, “Commercial.” His photo “Gree” also won an Award of Merit and a Purchase Award.

BEST OF PAINTING was won by Peg Critendon of Eagle Lake, for her oil “Moon Over India.” She also won an Award of Merit for her painting entitled, “Youth.”

BEST OF PHOTOGRAPHY was won by Clifford Parody for his photo entitled, “Separation of Beauty and Beast.”

BEST OF 3-D was won by Cathy Peak of Winter Haven for her basketry creation called, “Seagrass.”

Judging the show were Polk Museum of Art curators Todd Behrens and Leticia Miller. They were impressed with the quality of work in the show. “The works selected for Best of Show and Best of Category showed us new ideas or visualizations in well executed formats. These selections were works we kept returning to, works that can hold their own outside of a classroom setting,” they said.
