PCC Trio Success Begins Operation

Polk Community College's new retention program, known as TRIO Success, is now available on both campuses. The program offers free, individualized academic and personal support to students, whose ultimate goal is to earn a bachelor's degree.

The goal is to initially enroll 160 students in the program.

To qualify for the TRIO Success program students must:

  •  be a first generation college student (That means that neither natural parent earned a 4-year degree.),
  • meet low income federal guidelines and/or be a person with a disability and
  • attend PCC on a full time basis.

This will be the third leg in a "trio" of federal supported programs. The other grant programs, Talent Search and Upward Bound, assist Polk County high school students to graduate and enter college. This program will help PCC students stay in college.

Students in this program will receive:

  • mentoring and tutorial services,
  • academic, financial, or personal counseling,
  • assistance in securing admission and financial aid for enrollment at PCC and four-year colleges,
  • information about career options,
  • special services for students with limited English proficiency.

In consultation with the TRIO counselor, students will develop Personal Success Plans that will guide and support their efforts.

Staff members of TRIO Success are Edward LoPresto, Director; Rick Jeffries, Counselor; Crystal Whitley, Administrative Assistant.
