Ray Newman, Director of Polk Community College's
Criminal Justice Training Center, has been appointed to Florida's
Regional Anti-Terrorism Task Force- Tampa Bay Region. Newman
was chosen for the post because he serves as Florida Chair of
the State Training Directors Association. Newman will focus on
anti-terrorism training efforts.
"I will work with the task force and see that the training
is consistent with the statewide master plan," Newman explained.
As part of this effort, PCC will host a two-day workshop for
law enforcement officers throughout Florida. The session, "Law
Enforcement's Response to Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) Incidents,"
will be held Oct. 17 and 18 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
This class developed by the United States Department of Justice
and Louisiana State University provides awareness training to
those who will be the first to respond to a terrorism attack.
The course will cover: the terrorist threat, coordinated response
to WMD incidents, WMDs themselves, personal protection &
safety, strategies and tactics for WMD incidents and analysis
of typical WMD scenarios/case studies.
The Anti-Terrorism Task Force is a result of a directive made
by Gov. Jeb Bush after the terrorist attacks on the World Trade
Center. The governor directed the Florida Department of Law Enforcement
to complete a comprehensive assessment of Florida's capabilities
to prevent, mitigate and respond to terrorist attack. Training
is one of the areas the FDLE is directed to examine with a focus
on preventing and mitigating a terrorist attack.
