NYU Sends It's Thanks To PCC;
SAB Raises $3,000 For Red Cross

Polk Community College has received a letter from New York University in appreciation of a banner that students, faculty and staff signed in response to the Sept. 11 terrorist attack on New York City.

The letter is from Erin Loranger, Associate Director of Admissions for NYU Stern School of Business. It was sent to Jon Morrell, PCC's Dean of Student Services.

"I just wanted to let you and your students know that I, personally, was so very touched when I walked by our student lounge and saw a banner from the students of Polk Community College prominently displayed showing words of support for students at NYU," she wrote.

It is at this grass roots level that people, such as your students, are reaching out and really having a positive impact on individuals who have suffered so much. I applaud your students and send a heartfelt thank you."

Professor Ann McLeod and Sonia Cook, Student Activities Board (SAB) Advisor, organized a special commemoration event on Sept. 20. It featured speeches and the playing of taps. During the event, students and faculty signed the NYU banner and purchased American flag T-shirts with proceeds going to the Red Cross.

Since the Sept. 11 terrorist attack, SAB has staged other commemorative events on both campuses and has raised $3,000 with the sale of these T-shirts. These funds have been donated to the Red Cross.

Jon Morrell commented on the letter from NYU and the T-shirt fundraiser. "This is indicative of the sincere caring that our students and the people who work here feel for New Yorkers who were injured, killed or traumatized," he said.
