Back On Campus: Adult Enrichment Program- March 18 - 22, 2001

     A smorgasbord of workshops aimed at adults will be held March 18 - 22 on Polk Community College’s Winter Haven campus. Registration is now being held for the sessions that range from books, law, writing and health. The deadline to register is March 11.

    The program, called Back on Campus, is a dream of Helene Schulz, a retired PCC professor. She made a donation to the PCC Foundation with the intent that more people would be made aware of what college has to offer. The instructors are PCC faculty members, along with professionals or experts in their fields.

    The classes are offered in three one-hour sessions starting at 1 p.m. and held two or three days a week. Offerings include:

A.  LAW TIPS – Three Lawyers from a firm established in Winter Haven 60 years ago.

 

-Monday, “Estate Planning And Other Legal Issues.”  Charles Chilton is an active member of the community and a pilot for “Angel Flight”, a non-professional association of pilots who fly needy patients and their families to hospitals.

 

-Wednesday, “Pre-nuptial Agreements For Second Marriages”.  Kelly Butz, a new member of the firm, specializes in criminal and family law.

 

-Friday, “Information on Assisted Living”.  Robert (Bob) Stambaugh is a third generation native of Polk County.

 

B.  MUSIC APPRECIATION – Roger Hewitt.  Roger is an adjunct professor at Polk Community college where he teaches music

A.  LECTURE SERIES

 

-Monday, “Picking Great Books For Kids”. “Lure of Mysteries”-  How to select age appropriate books for children is taught by Beverly Woolery, education and early childhood teacher at PCC.

 

-Wednesday, “Dreams” - an exploration of the meaning of dreams will be taught by Bill Ryan, professor of psychology at PCC for 34 years.

 

-Friday, will be a discussion of why people are drawn to mysteries led by Ann Wilford, a retired Lake Wales High School English teacher.

 

B. STUDY OF ISLAM

 

-Monday “Why the Muslims Hate Us” - Dr. Carl Wheeless has lived and traveled all over the world, has studied in Turkey and worked as a teacher/missionary in Pakistan.  He resides at Florida Presbyterian Homes and has written a book about his experiences.

 

-Wednesday and Friday “The World of Islam” - Dr. Mohammed Ismail was born in Egypt and came to the US at age 22.  He became an American citizen in 1981.  He is a senior scientist for the Department of Citrus and a professor at the University of Florida.  His wife teaches high school science and his son is a doctor of optometry in Winter Haven.

A.  HINGES OF HISTORY – Theme of 7 books (three now written, four more to come) by Thomas

Cahill who writes about events which have changed the course of history.  They are rich humanities

studies and very reader-friendly.

 

-Monday, Part I Introduction to the book, Gift of the Jews, (Monotheism comes to the world).  Dr. Steven Negley, senior pastor of 1st Presbyterian Church, Winter Haven, leads.

 

-Wednesday, Part II  Desire of the Everlasting Hills (Christ comes to the world and brings a new concept of love).  Dr. Alan Harvey, Assoc. Pastor, 1st Presbyterian Church, Winter Haven, leader.

 

-Friday, Part III  How The Irish Save Civilization  The saving of beautiful Medieval manuscripts during the Dark Ages.  Led by Mrs. Betty Houlihan Shinn, retired English teacher and librarian.  (Betty says, “With a name like Houlihan, I’m a natural for this one!”).

 

B.  CAMEOS

 

-Memoir Writing, This class will guide the participant in writing memoirs for family and friends.Helene Schulz, is a retired PCC English/ Humanities and French teacher.  She started Cameos Classes in 1993 in the community.

    A.  WINTER HAVEN HISTORY

 

-Tuesday and Thursday, “Early Winter Haven” – Bob Gernert is Executive Director of the Winter Haven Chamber of Commerce.  He and his wife are founders of Historic Winter Haven where Bob serves as president.  His illustrated lectures are fun and full of facts.

 

-Wednesday, “Early Winter Haven” – Three women who have lived most of the 20th century in Winter Haven and offer a lively classroom tour of “our town” in its early days.  They are: Mrs. Barbara Bissett, Mrs. Phyllis Gilbert, and Mrs. Alice Thompson.

     A.  FLORIDA HISTORY – Max Brandon, a real history buff, is a popular political science and history

teacher at PCC where he has taught U.S., World and Florida history for 32 years.

 

     B.   POETRY

-Tuesday, “Poetry of Maya Angelou”- Rebecca Heintz

 

-Thursday, “Poetry of Emily Dickinson”- Rebecca Heintz is a member of the PCC faculty who teaches humanities and English.

 

    C.   THEATRE—“Soul of the World” - Norman Small, teacher of Humanities and Speech at

PCC. He is also the Director-Producer of Theatre Winter Haven.

A.     LITERATURE-REMARKABLE WRITERS

 

-Tuesday “Kate Chopin” – a review of her literature and life.  Travel back to the 1890’s to explore Chopin’s steamy literature and delight in her unconventional and passionate life.  Chloe Warner, PCC professor will lead the class.

 

-Thursday, “Amy Tan” – a review of her literature and life.  Amy Tan’s novels describe with fascinating detail the plight and strength of the Chinese woman, both modern and ancient.  Chloe Warner has taught at PCC since 1987.  She has a particular interest in women authors.

 

B.     NEEDLETURN APPLIQUÉ  - A hands on class in this method of appliqué. Fabric will be supplied, but participants will need to bring needle, small scissors and a thimble.  Betty Cook is a member of Winter Haven Quilters.

 

 C.     POLITICS - “Local Politics”- Rick Dantzler,  Winter Haven’s own; a former member of the Florida House of Representatives, Senator, and Democratic nominee for Lt. Governor.  He discuss his experiences as a politician in Polk County.

 

D.         STAINED GLASS MOSAICS- A hands-on class to make a small mosaic tabletop. Materials supplied for additional fee.  Rebecca Heintz is a PCC humanities professor.

A.      HEALTH AND HUMOR – Nat West is a WH Hospital vice president in charge of education, community health and volunteers.  He is on the board of WH Chamber of Commerce and is very active in the community.  He also performs on guitar and sings at “ Pickin’ In the Park” which he founded (1st Friday evening of each month with a band called “Harmony Grits”).
