Take the ASVAB Career Assessment on April 9

Polk Community College will be offering the ASVAB Career Exploration Assessment on April 9, 12:45 pm in the Student Center (WST126), Winter Haven campus.

The ASVAB Career Exploration Assessment is a comprehensive career exploration and planning program that includes:

·         a multiple aptitude test battery,

·         an interest inventory, and

·         various career planning tools designed to help students explore the world of work.

ASVAB stands for the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery. It is the most widely used multiple-aptitude test battery in the world. It was originally designed to predict future academic and occupational success in military occupations and it is now used to assess academic ability and predict success in a wide variety of occupations.

Seating is limited for this free program. Please respond today as seats will fill up quickly.  To reserve your seat in the program, email your name and telephone number to Mary Westgate at mwestgate@polk.edu.  You will receive a confirmation email, which will serve as your admission ticket to the assessment.  You may schedule your appointment for the Interest Inventory at the same time you reserve your seat for the Skills Assessment.

The program has two assessments, the first is the Skills Assessment and the second is the Interest Inventory.

The Skills Assessment is a multiple choice test, consisting of 8 subjects. It lasts 3 hours and will determine the student's skills in subjects like English, Math, Science and Technology.

The Interest Inventory will identify broad areas of interest that each person enjoys. The Interest Inventory is computerized and will be offered in the Winter Haven Career Center. The Interest Inventory requires an appointment and lasts about 45 minutes to an hour. It will be offered 8 am -5 pm on Friday, May 2 and 9 am – 1 pm on Saturday, May 3.  (Students will also be introduced to the ASVAB website where they are introduced to OccFind and can explore careers that match their skills with their interests.)

The ASVAB Career Exploration Program can help students identify their interests, clarify what is important to them, and better understand their skills and abilities.  Results of the aptitude test and the interest inventory enable students to evaluate their skills, estimate performance in academic and vocational endeavors, and identify potentially satisfying careers. These results are integrated with work values to help students identify and prioritize possible career choices. Students are encouraged to consider their own work-related values and other important personal preferences as they explore the world of work and learn career exploration skills that will benefit them throughout their work lives.
