Gale Reference Databases

 

These databases are unique in that they present information found in journals and magazines as well as excerpts from books.  Examples are given for citing both types of resources.

Biography Resource Center -- Comprehensive, full-text, online biographical reference database covering literature, science, multicultural studies, business, entertainment, politics, sports, government, history, current events and the arts.

Health and Wellness -- Easy-to-use interface with access to full-text nursing and allied health journals, encyclopedias and other reference sources, as well as informational pamphlets. Also includes the Alternative Health suite of resources.

History Resource Center --History Resource Center: U.S., is a comprehensive online collection of historical information contained in periodicals, reference works, and primary source documents 

Literature Resource Center -- Full-text access to biographies, bibliographies, and critical analyses of authors from every age and literary discipline.

Opposing Viewpoints --Search viewpoint articles, contextual topic overviews, government and organizational statistics, court cases, profiles of government agencies and special interest groups, newspaper and magazine articles and more concerning social issues.

 

Before you Search: All databases are available to currently enrolled student by selecting Databases from the PCC Library website and then selecting Logon to PCC's Databases. Borrower ID = Social Security Number.  PIN = the last four digits of your SSN.

How to Search:  Enter a search term in the Search box.  Results are displayed within tabs at the top of the screen.  Journal articles are listed under the Periodicals tab.  Reference resources -- usually from books -- are listed under Reference Materials tab or in the case of Opposing Viewpoints, the Viewpoints tab. Select an appropriate tab, then the title that is closest to your search.  The full text of the document will be displayed.  Citation information usually appears at the end of the document.

How to Print: Click the Printer icon on the left side of the screen. The document will be reformatted.  Use the browser print function to print the material.

How to Cite from Viewpoints: (MLA) Author. "Title of Article." Source.  Database. Name of Service.  Year of Publication. Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center. Polk Community College Library. Lakeland, FL.  Date of Access. <http://www.galegroup.com>.
