This report on Liberal Education Outcomes provides a wide-ranging and thought-provoking overview of student achievement in college. It examines a set of outcomes that are highly prized both by the academy and by employers, including critical thinking, quantitative literacy, communication skills, ethical reasoning, and civic engagement. Drawing together research from diverse sources and studies, this report examines what we know—and how much we still need to find out—about student achievement on these and other important learning outcomes across the several years of college.

Policy Alert: Course Redesign Improves Learning and Reduces Cost. A June 2005 Policy Alert by the National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education with important findings affecting the future of higher education.  This issue offers persuasive data that show how course redesign using information technology can reduce cost and increase student learning. Accountability for Better Results: A National Imperative for Higher Education. Citing increasing global competition, low rates of college completion, and a college access and success gap for minority students, a national commission of political, business, and higher education leaders called for a “fresh approach” to accountability designed to increase access and lift graduation rates for all students. Toward these ends, the National Commission on Accountability in Higher Education recommended an ongoing vigorous dialogue targeted on meeting the educational needs of the American people, issuing a series of recommendations designed to improve student preparation, public investment in educational priorities, teaching and research, cost-effectiveness, and the availability of key data. The latest edition of CCSSE Highlights, which features findings from the 2004 Florida consortium. In 2004, the Florida Division of Community Colleges and Workforce Education sponsored participation of all 28 of the state’s community colleges in the Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE). The National Association for College Admission Counseling asks provocative questions in its annual "State of College Admission Report," released in spring 2005. The Report provides analysis of the combined results from the Admission Trends Survey and the Counseling Trends Survey. Based on surveys of school counselors and colleges and universities nationwide, NACAC provides this report to highlight issues of concern to college-bound students, their parents, and the educators who serve them. The Community College Labor-Market Responsiveness Initiative by the US DOE Office of Vocational and Adult Education will research indicators, policies, and practices that support labor-market responsiveness and provide reports and a handbook for use by community colleges to focus on what works. The following publications are now available:
The "Market Responsive" Community College, a report that d
efines the characteristics of a market-driven college and identify the indicators and measures that can be used to determine the extent to which a college is market-driven.  
The 21st Century Community College: A Strategic Guide to Maximizing Labor Market Responsiveness,
a guide that will assist colleges wishing to become more market driven, to include: Volume 1: Unleashing the Power of the Community College; Volume 2: Promising Practices and Lessons from the Field; Volume 3: Self-Assessment Tools and Resources; and the Research Appendices to the 21st Century Community College, a compendium of cross-college analyses and profiles of 30 colleges across ten labor markets examined to produce the Strategic Guide, as well as a discussion of measures kept by the colleges and their utility for assessing and improving labor market responsiveness.
