General Information

 
  • Over 10,000 credit students and over 8,700 non-credit students attend classes at PCC on the Lakeland and Winter Haven campuses. 

  • The majority of Polk Community College's students attend on a part time basis. 

  • The college started in 1964 at a temporary site. The 100- acre Winter Haven campus houses the district offices. It opened in 1968 on the site of a former golf course.

  • The Lakeland campus in the 1990s. The Lakeland campus is a joint use facility with the University of South Florida. Approximately 90% of the students attending classes on the Lakeland campus are PCC students.

  • A third academic building on the Lakeland campus - the 125,000 square-foot technology building opened in 2007. The $28-million building is the largest structure on either of PCC’s campuses.

  • PCC is establishing a center in Lake Wales in the former City Hall. The historic building, which was severely damaged by the 2004 hurricanes, will be converted it into a modern academic center with five 30-seat general classrooms, a 45-seat computer classroom and a 30-seat classroom/community room. The building will be named the J D Alexander Center, after State Senator Alexander, who spearheaded the drive in the legislature to fund the project. The $3.6 million renovation is anticipated to be complete in 2009.

 

Graduation

  • Over 60% of Polk County's college-bound seniors attend PCC.

  • Since 1964, over 29,500 degrees  have been awarded (as of December 2007).

  • More that half of our credit students register using PCC's Internet system known as PASSPORT

  • The quality of PCC programs is demonstrated by the success of our graduates, including:

    • State Attorney Jerry Hill;

    • Gary Schemmer, M.D.;

    • TV personality Kathy Fountain;

    • Lakeland City Commissioners Gow Fields and Howard Wiggs;

    • former Sheriff Lawrence Crow;

    • Sheriff Grady Judd;

    • Bank executives Ernie Pinner, Ken Ely, Robert Dodd, Greg Littleton, and William Cloyd;

    • Judges Ron Herring, Ellen Masters, and Michael Raiden; and

    • Business executives Sandy Fortin, Don Ingram, Mark Irby, Bernie Little, Jr., Steve Saterbo and Victor Shumate.

     

  • PCC offers over 190 programs leading to an Associate in Arts degree.

  • There are also over 30 programs leading to Associate in Applied Science and Associate in Science degrees. 

  • Students also can attend 16 programs leading to a Certificate (11 programs are Credit Certificate programs and 5 are Vocational Certificate programs).
