November 2007
- On June 8, 2007, PCC’s Athletic Director, Bing Tyus, won
the 2006-2007 AstroTurf Athletic Director of the Year for
Junior Colleges in the Southeast Region. In honor of this
distinguished award, the family, friends, and supporters of
Bing Tyus have established the Bing Tyus Athletic Director’s
Endowed Scholarship for student athletes. A total of $11,620
was donated to establish this scholarship, including a
leadership gift from friend and longtime supporter, Bob
Georges. |

October
2007 - Citizens Bank & Trust donated $10,000 to benefit
residents of Greater Lake Wales through scholarships. This
generous donation was key to the Foundation being able to
announce that it had surpassed the $100,000 mark toward the
$250,000 Greater Lake Wales Scholarship goal. |

September 2007
- Verizon donated $15,000 to support Polk County’s small
businesses training efforts through scholarship assistance.
This is the second consecutive grant that Verizon has
provided to PCC’s Corporate College to help small companies
offset their training costs. This donation encourages
employees of small business to engage in professional
development which enhances the economic development of our
entire community.

- Residents of Mountain Lake started an initiative in 1998
to start a scholarship program to assist migrant farmworkers.
This initiative was spearheaded by Bunny Parthenais, a
Mountain Lake resident. Bunny and her friends and neighbors
have donated nearly $140,000 to this program since its
inception, and in 2007 approximately $36,500 was contributed
to the Mountain Lake Farmworkers Scholarships. |

July 2007
- The Charlie Brown – Lake Region Dundee Rotarian
Scholarship was established with a gift of $10,000 to honor
the memory of Charles Brown. Charlie was a leader in the
community, with a generous, carefree spirit. On March 8,
2005 Charlie was sworn in as a new member of the Lake Region
Dundee Rotary Club and later that day he passed away from a
heart attack. He was extremely proud of his new membership
in the Club. Charlie’s fellow Rotarians, his family and
friends wanted to honor his memory by making a difference in
the life of others in perpetuity. |

June 2007
- The George Jenkins Fund, held within the Community
Foundation of Greater Lakeland presented a $25,000 donation
for the PCC Foundation’s First Generation in College
Scholarships initiative. More than 75% of PCC students are
First Generation in College. |

May 2007
- Family, Friends and Colleagues of Ron Puckett donated
$10,000 for the Ron Puckett Memorial Scholarship. Ron was a
professor at Polk Community College for 38 years. He was an
exceptional teacher whose commitment to his students and the
college was beyond compare. He won both an Alumni
Recognition Award for exceptional service to students” and
the George Jenkins Endowed Faculty Chair during his tenure.
He used his Endowed Faculty Chair funds to travel and visit
the homes of our country’s great authors. He collected
memorabilia of these authors from every place he visited and
donated it back to the College. Ron passed away on August
28, 2005. The people who knew Ron best admired and respected
how much PCC meant to him and decided to contribute to his
legacy at the College by establishing an Endowed Scholarship
in Ron’s name. |

with the Hospitals and Medical Centers of our community.
These partnerships are addressing the critical nursing
shortage in the area, as well as other allied health needs.
Heart of Florida Regional Medical Center’s $100,000 gift
will train 20 PCC Students in the Nursing or Allied Heath
arenas. |

- Clear Springs donated $25,000 for the First Generation
Scholarship Initiative. This initiative was established by
the state and PCC was one of only five community colleges in
the state to achieve their goal. Polk Community College’s
goal set by the state was $106,348.00. The Clear Springs
gift brought the total raised for this initiative to
$122,314.91. |
