Free: Two Weekend Concerts Feature Diverse Local Talent
April 15, 2011 - This weekend two free concerts on the Winter Haven campus of Polk State College will spotlight a wide range of musical genres. The concerts, titled “Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow,” take place at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 16, and Sunday, April 17, 2011, in the Polk State Winter Haven Fine Arts Theatre.
According to John Anderson, Polk State’s coordinator of music, the concerts will feature all areas of the college’s award-winning music department, as well as a broad spectrum of composers. “We are paying homage to ‘yesterday’ with the works of Mozart, Vivaldi and Rossini,” he said. “But we are also spotlighting today’s composers with works by Sharp, Ames and Shaw, as well as world premieres of works by our own students. In that respect,” he said, “We are proud to showcase ‘the music of tomorrow,’ and that makes these shows truly special.”
The music program at Polk State College is enjoying a renaissance under Anderson’s leadership, and the department’s student performers have become frequent performers at local venues, while also winning honors at statewide competitions.
