Polk State Job Fair Open to Veterans, Community

September 29, 2011 - Polk State College will host a “Hiring Heroes” employment fair Oct. 13 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the gymnasium on the Winter Haven campus.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics in August reported that veterans are struggling with 10.1 percent unemployment. While that number is discouraging, it is only slightly higher than the 8.9 percent unemployment rate faced by civilians, according to the BLS.

Because high unemployment is such a widespread problem, the “Hiring Heroes” event will be open to the public, in an effort to help all Polk County residents get back to work.

“Polk State has always played a crucial role in work force development. In this economy, however, we know that degrees alone don’t necessarily translate into job offers. We’re excited about this event, because it creates a context in which qualified workers can come into direct contact with organizations that are hiring. As usual, matching talent with opportunity is the key,” said Polk State College President Dr. Eileen Holden.

Polk State is joined by Polk Works in presenting the “Hiring Heroes” event. Ninety employers and service providers are expected to attend, with most of these being companies looking to hire multiple employees.

Among the employers scheduled to attend: the U.S. Secret Service, FBI, the City of Lakeland, the City of Winter Haven, CSX Transportation, Comcar, the Department of Homeland Security and GC Services. The various branches of the military will also be represented.

The available positions range from entry level to professional and are in fields such as insurance, warehousing, truck driving, finance, education, healthcare, banking, aviation and law enforcement.

Veterans will be able to enter the event an hour earlier – at 10 a.m. – with an approved Polk Works voucher. Veterans should visit a Polk Works One-Stop Center to get a voucher.

Attendees should dress professionally and bring plenty of resumes. No children are allowed.
