2002 - 2003 Barbi Tromblee - Historian EVENTS |
DATE |
| "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" at AMC Theatre, Lakeland | Sat. Sept. 14 2002 |
| Even though the group was small, the laughs were big. The movie was aimed towards all ages . It was funny and allowed the audience to learn about another culture. This is a must see, if you haven't had a chance. |

| Guest Speakers at Circle meeting in studios: Vincent Wyatt and Denise Arreslan | Fri. Oct. 11 2002 |
| I have never heard the German language spoken in a normal conversation. I know that we have all heard Hitler and his hideous speeches of anger, but our guest speakers' conversation was nothing of the sort. Their accents and words were elegant and unique, and all they did was talk about normal things: what part of Germany they were from, likes and dislikes, just every day things. I personally thought it was very "sexy". I was held within their words. Vincent and Denise's conversation was also very educational. From the different accents to pronunciation, it was a linguist's dream. BT |

| Hispanic Festival at Munn Park and "Mostly Martha" at Polk Theatre | Fri. Oct. 12 2002 |
| I have three
words for the Hispanic festival: HOT, HOT, HOT (Caliente, Caliente,
Caliente). And no, I am not
talking about the tall, dark, and handsome
Hispanic men. O.K. maybe I am. But I am also talking about the
Food and the Sun. There were all types of Hispanic cuisine and
beverage, everything from Puerto Rico and Mexico to Sno-cones and Margaritas.
I personally never knew the Sno-cones were Hispanic-but they are called
"Piraguas" in Puerto Rico because when it's hot, they're a
perfect treat. Learn something
new every day. And don't forget the piñatas and clay pots for sale.
There were so many things to learn and do at the Hispanic Festival.
There was music and dance and good company from the many different
Hispanic cultures all day. I recommend anyone who enjoys the Hispanic
culture or just wants to enjoy themselves for an afternoon of games and
food, to stop by the Hispanic Festival next year (held in October each
year).
To cool down and rest the feet, some members visited a local Mexican restaurant across from the park. Later that evening, the IC Club met for a movie at the Polk Theatre. This movie was entertaining - great cooking and thought provoking scenes - the difficulties of every day life, the despair through the loss of a loved one, and the ability to overcome these challenges. The audience enjoyed listening to German and reading the English subtitles. The sodas were excellent! BT |

| "Life is Beautiful" in LLC 2188 Lakeland | Sat. Oct. 26 2002 |
| A movie of all the characteristics. A hilarious comedy and a heartfelt, tear jerker. It had good, family humor in the beginning, but a sad and depressing ending. The actors were superb for their roles, even though the ending was foreseen-the tragedy of the Holocaust. The event was a "potluck" which meant that if you came, you brought food. There was food for a feast: chips, cookies, cakes, and spray cheese. Thank goodness for the artificial, spray cheese or else I would have really been crying. BT |

| Holocaust Museum in St. Petersburg | Sat. Nov. 2 2002 |
| What a beautiful day in the neighborhood of St. Petersburg. The sun was shining and the waves of the near by gulf soothes the nerves. Little did we know that we were in for a rude awakening. As I entered the large, gray building I felt a strong chill down my back bone that ended in my toes, perhaps it was the metal detector that we had to go through or maybe it was the graphic pictures on the wall of how human beings treated other human being. The Holocaust museum was a very enlightening experience for me. I would suggest the museum for late teenagers and adults only due to the graphic nature of the content. I would also only suggest the Holocaust museum for people who have made their mind on the issue, the museum is not for the weak minded, but the ones who are strong in their opinions. BT |

Epcot International Festival in Orlando, Florida |
Sat. Nov. 9 2002 |
| I never knew that Mickey Mouse ear hats were so much fun. Since this was my first time at the Disney Parks, except the Magic Kingdom, I felt like I was five or twelve years old again. I went running and skipping gleefully down the main road that led to the big, round globe thing of Epcot. No, not really, but I did walk really fast. The day started off with five people, including myself, and ended with fifteen or so. Our big group did split up on their own ways once things got started. I and four other buddies, members, went off on a boat ride and then onto Germany. That was fun, but we didn't eat until we reached Italy. We went to a fine restaurant, I do not remember the name, but the food was OK. Not the best I have ever had but the food hit the spot. After more walking around and visiting other countries, such as Mexico and China, my small group decided that we wanted to go home. So we did. BT |
|
| "Lysistrata" Florida Southern College | Thurs. Nov. 14 2002 |
| Like the classic Aristophanes original, this presentation was an updated comedic battle of the sexes which found its heroine leading a host of other wives in a war of celibacy to end their husbands' warring ways. Result: Victory for the women and hilarity for the audience! Adapted and directed by Mary T. Albright. |
|
| "La Boheme" at Florida Southern College | Fri. Nov. 22 2002 |
| International Circle tickets were $10.00 for students. Otherwise, tickets were $12.50 for students; regular - $25.00. Participants met at Florida Southern's Branscomb Auditorium at 7:00 p.m. at the front entrance to met and socialize with other club participants; the group was elegantly dressed for the opera which started at 7:30 p.m. and for the dinner later at Carrabba's, southside Lakeland. The performance was superb - the Stanislavsky Opera Company provided a magnificent evening for IC participants. This is a must if you've never attended an opera. Join us next year! |
Check out the IC club album for pictures of the evening. Extra pictures available during IC meetings. |
