1. Qualifications:
- A. Financial
Need: Qualification for the Federal Work Study Program (FWSP) is
based strictly upon financial need. Regulations governing
qualifications are set by the Federal Government.
- B. Semester
Hours Required: Applicants must be enrolled at Polk Community College
in order to qualify for the Federal Work Study Program.
- C. Academic
Requirements: Students with a status of academic warning or probation may not
work under the Federal Work Study Program. All work study students
must comply with the Financial Aid Standards of Progress.
2. Job Placement: The Student Financial
Aid Office secures "Job Requests" from the departments
on campus and from off-campus projects. Qualified students are
furnished with Interview Forms and referred to these departments
or projects. After the interview occurs, the prospective
employer completes his/her portion of the forms (indicating the outcome
of the interview) and returns it to the Student Financial Aid
Office. Interview forms must be returned to this office before
a student can be placed on the payroll. Employment and work permit
forms must also be completed.
3. Period
of Employment:
Students are normally employed for one academic year (Fall and
Spring only).
4. Hours Per
Week:
No student may work more than 20 hours per week on the Federal
Work Study Program any week that he/she has a class; students
may not work during exam periods.
5. Pay Periods: The student is normally
paid once each month, usually the last working day of the month.
Checks will be mailed by the Business Office.
6. Pay Rates: For current pay rates,
check with your Financial Aid Advisor.
7. Taxes: All wages under this
program are subject to Federal Income Tax. It is the student's
responsibility to secure and to complete the proper forms. No
student can receive a payroll check until these forms have been
completed. Any changes in the exemptions claimed on these forms
are effected by completing new forms.
8. W-2 Forms: Statements of wages withheld are issued
by the college at the end of the calendar year and distributed
by the Business Office. Should your employment end, you must provide
your permanent forwarding address to the Business Office so
that this form may be forwarded to you.
9. Job Changes: No student may change jobs without first
securing permission from the Office of Student Financial Aid
and his/her current immediate supervisor. Job changes are not effected
without good cause. Students released from (2) positions are
dropped from the program.
10. Working For
More Than One Department: Students
participating in this program may not work for more than one department
simultaneously.
11. Termination: Supervisors are at complete
liberty to discharge a student at any time that the student proves
he/she is not dependable or that his/her work fails to be satisfactory.
Under these circumstances, the Office of Student Financial Aid
is not obligated to find the student another job, but
may elect to find one additional position.
12. Re-Application: Students must re-apply for work and bring
their financial need assessment up-to-date by completing the most
current FAFSA application. Applications must
be received by PCC on or before May 15th for priority consideration
for work during the fall and spring semesters or the following
academic year.
Note: Any FWSP
student who fails to re-apply for work or bring his/her financial
need assessment up-to-date by the deadline, may not be able to
participate in the program. Funds are limited and
are awarded to qualified students who apply by the deadline.
Questions regarding the Federal Work Study Program should be
directed to the Office of
Student Financial Aid, (863) 297-1004.
