"Everything
you ever wanted to know, but were afraid to ask!!"
- Polk Community College sponsors
the Federal Work Study Program under the authority of the Economic
Opportunity Act of 1964, (Public Law 88452) and Title IV, Part
C, of the Higher Education Act of 1965. This program is subsidized
by the Federal Government and provides part-time work through
the various departments on campus and through public or private
non-profit organizations off campus for qualifying students.
In order to qualify, students must demonstrate financial need
for the earnings from part-time employment. Under the United
States Office of Education guidelines, priority must be given
to the students having the greatest financial need.
- The Federal Government pays
75% of the student's gross wages. Polk Community College, or the off-campus agency
for which the student works is responsible for the remaining 25% * plus the
employer's matching share of any Social Security paid by their
student employees and Workmen's Compensation if applicable. Job
placement is handled through the Student Financial Aid Office.
College departments or off-campus projects in need of students
file their request in the Student Financial Aid Office. This office in turn
refers qualified students to prospective employers. The Business
Office bills the off-campus project office monthly for the employer's
matching funds.
* Polk Community College currently
qualifies for a waiver of the institutional share of 25%.
