Information Technology/Access Use Policy for Polk Community College Students

By leaving this page and entering the Internet, I understand
and accept the terms below and agree to comply.
The PCC student network is restricted to purposes consistent with the mission of Polk Community College. All individuals who utilize information technology resources provided by Polk Community College (this includes but is not limited to telephones, computers, the PCC local area and wide area networks, and the Internet) must use these resources for academic purposes only. Use of Polk Community College's computing and network resources is a privilege and not a right. Inappropriate use can result in suspension or revocation of privileges.

Polk Community College is not responsible for damage to or loss of data from an individual's disk storage media or home computer resulting from use of a College computer corrupted by viruses, power surges, equipment failures, and/or sabotage. In addition, the College is not responsible for damage to or loss of data from an individual's disk storage media or home computer resulting from email or any other kind of file transfers from PCC faculty or staff members and/or other students. PCC does everything within its power to insure that harmful files will not be propagated, but students are responsible for the protection of their personal hardware, software and data. We encourage all students to scan any files they receive before using them on their computer with a currently updated virus protection product. Students should maintain electronic copies of all of their work throughout a term, so they always have a backup if data gets lost and/or corrupted on the Internet.

Inappropriate use can include but is not limited to the following:

  1. Intentional sending or retrieval of obscene, slanderous and/or harassing messages/materials. This includes verbal abuse, hate speech, threats, intimidation, stalking, coercion and/or other conduct that threatens or endangers the rights, health or safety of any person.
  2. Use of networked or online resources for academic plagiarism.
  3. Participation in chats that are non-academic and not specifically related to class assignments.
  4. Playing games that are non-academic and not specifically related to class assignments.
  5. Installation or download of software and/or files to PCC hardware or downloading/uploading of harmful or potentially harmful software to any media or Internet storage location.
  6. Participation in network activities that places an excessive or unwarranted demand on computer resources, including staff time, network bandwidth, computer capacity or potential harm to any computer or network.
  7. Violation of copyright including unauthorized copying or modifying of files.
  8. Unauthorized access (or attempted access) of any networked computer system.
  9. Use for commercial purposes.
  10. Other behavior deemed inappropriate in the PCC Student Code of Discipline.
Violation of these terms will result in notification of the appropriate administrative authorities as outlined in the PCC Student Conduct, Discipline and Due Process policy. This could include the Polk Community College administration, appropriate state or federal agencies and/or law enforcement authorities.
