Reference & Research
-
A
professional reference librarian is available at the Reference Desk to
assist students with formulating topics, developing research strategies, selecting
appropriate information resources and locating information. Our
reference librarians hold American Library Association accredited Master of Library Science (MLS)
degrees and have significant experience with delivering reference
services and assisting students with research problems.

Circulation
and Other Services
- Circulation
of Materials -
Currently enrolled PCC and currently employed
faculty or staff may borrow library materials designated for
circulation. No fines are charged, but delinquent
items will bar a person from checking out additional materials and, for
students, registration, transcripts, and grades may be blocked.
Photo identification such as the college
student ID card or valid driver's license or State ID card is required to
check out library materials.
Other visitors such as students from other institutions, alumni
and retired staff should click here for a description of services
available. Reference materials
are purchased for the purpose of being available to students
and faculty at all times and are, therefore, not available for
checkout. As a courtesy, faculty may request to borrow a reference
source overnight. Material should be returned to the library
by the next school day.
For further details please see the Lending of Library Materials Policy.
- Renewing
items from the online catalog, by phone or email - Borrowers may renew library
materials online, by telephone or email provided no items on loan to
the borrower are overdue. To renew online, click on Library
Catalogs from the library's homepage. Then click on MyAccount.
To renew by telephone, call during business hours:
Winter Haven campus, 297-1040; Lakeland campus, 297-1042. To
renew materials via email, send email to referencedesk@polk.edu.
Type "RENEW REQUEST" as the subject. In the body of
the message provide your name, student I.D. number (SSN), email
address, and the complete 14 character barcode number for each
item you are renewing. Borrowers with overdue materials
on record must return the overdue materials to the library before
other materials can be renewed or borrowed. No exceptions!
- Interlibrary Loan -
Books and copies of articles requested by PCC students
and employees may be secured
from other libraries with the approval of a librarian. Usually
there is no charge, and most requests arrive in less than 5
days.
- Ordering Materials
(print
& non-print library materials) - Faculty are encouraged to
submit written requests for materials they would like added to
the libraries' collections in support of the PCC curriculum.
- Periodicals -
Libraries have an extensive collection of journals, magazines,
and newspapers to support the curriculum. Back issues of most
titles are retained for research purposes. Periodicals do not
circulate. Increasingly, periodical articles are available in
electronic full-text format from subscription online databases.
Check with the Reference Librarian on campus for information on database
offerings.
- Group
Study Rooms - A group study room is available at each library on a
first come, first served basis for exclusive use by two or more
currently enrolled PCC students. No reservations
for these rooms are taken, but students may be required to restrict the
time of use if other students are waiting. Individual students may
use these rooms for quiet study if no students are waiting, but will be
asked to vacate the room for group use.

personal materials on Reserve for their students to read. The
Reserve Reading collection in located behind the Circulation Desk.
