INTERLIBRARY LOAN SERVICE AT PCC

 Interlibrary Loan Policies

What is Interlibrary Loan?

When you need information or material that is not available at the library you are currently using, it is possible to obtain that material from other libraries. Libraries borrow materials from each other for patron use on a regular basis through formalized interlibrary loan cooperatives.  Usually we try to locate materials that are located in Florida  libraries, but we may borrow from libraries in other states, or if necessary other countries.

Remember to ask the librarian first.  For many assignments there is material available locally.  Many journals and magazines are available online too, and, then there is the Web.  You may think that we have nothing on your topic, but you may have just missed some great information that the librarian could help you find.  You may  not have to wait for something to come from another location, the full text of an article may be available to you through one of the subscription databases available locally or in a book that you overlooked.

Who may use ILL Services

All currently enrolled students of Polk Community College and the Lakeland Campus of the University of South Florida may borrow materials by Interlibrary Loan through the PCC libraries. This service is also available to current faculty and staff members of PCC and USF Lakeland.

What is not available by Interlibrary Loan

Reference books, rare books, art prints and sculpture, software, models, and audio-visual materials are some categories of items that are generally not available for interlibrary loan.

Charges for Interlibrary Loans

Interlibrary loan service is subsidized by the college and is free to authorized users.  Although borrowers are  financially responsible for fines and lost or damaged materials assessed by lending libraries.

How long does it take?

Books from the other PCC campus are generally delivered within one or two work days. Books from other LINCC libraries usually take 2 to 4 days.  Books from USF take 3-5 days, but may take longer depending upon demand and workload.  Journal articles may take a few days longer.  Materials from libraries other that PCC or USF usually arrive within 5 to 7 days. Out of state items take longer because they are shipped by fourth class U.S. Mail.  Under certain circumstances,  articles may be delivered electronically.  Ask for details at your library's circulation desk.  The library will notify you by phone when your loan arrives.  The above response times are averages only.  The actual time it takes any one item to arrive is dependent upon the response of the lending library.

Journal Articles

The full text of many journal articles is now available online. There are a number of ways to determine if the article you need is available electronically or if you need to submit a written request to have the material copied and sent.  The best way is to ask the reference librarian.  They will show you how to use the "Citation Linker" feature of our library system.

There are two prerequisites for using the USF Electronic Library;  1) you must have established your personal "MY USF" Net ID account to access the USF student portal, and 2) you will need the Adobe Acrobat Reader software installed on  your computer to open many of the articles.*

If the journal you are interested is available in print format only, complete an Interlibrary Loan Request Form and submit it to the reference librarian or to the circulation assistant.

*If you have a problem with your student ID contact USF-Lakeland Student Services Department.

Everything Else - Interlibrary Loan  (OCLC)

For books and articles from journals that are not available from one of the above sources and are not available electronically, complete the Interlibrary Loan Request Form and take it to a reference librarian. It is not necessary to identify potential lending libraries.  We will locate the closest lending libraries.  Because delivery is by fourth class mail, this option may take 7 to 10 days or longer for books.  Articles may be faxed or transmitted electronically in certain circumstances.  Ask at your library's circulation desk for details.
