1. Think about a topic that interests you, something you will enjoy reading about.
Several possible topics have been listed in you text book. These topics are very general in nature so you may want to think about a smaller topic within the general categories listed.
For example:
For the topic of sex education (should or should not be taught in schools), perhaps you could find an article on the distribution of birth control information in high schools.
* Check at the Circulation desk in the library for a folder of articles for you to use.
2. Each of the topics
listed below has a suggestion for locating articles with an opinion
for or against.
The blue titles listed below are titles of books in the library that contain articles (reprinted in book form for your convenience). Each book contains several articles. Use the table of contents in the front of the book to locate the article you would like to use. Click on the information link for each book to find the book's location in the library.
There are other articles from magazines cited for you too. There are many many more out there waiting for you. You can find them by using the Academic Search Premier and Custom Newspaper databases.

Finding magazine articles by using Academic Search Premier
Some magazine
articles were suggested in section #2.
These articles are available in electronic format - they are delivered
to you through the CDROM/Internet computer terminals.
There are many more articles in electronic (and print form) just
waiting for you to find them.
Follow the directions below to locate the articles above as well
as other articles on the topic you have chosen.
1. Go to the PCC library website: www.polk.cc.fl.us/it/library/index.html
2. Click on Remote Access Databases.
On the Remote Access Databases page you will find lots of information resources that are available to Florida's community college students.
There are databases for lots of different things, not just articles, read the descriptions before you choose. For this assignment try Academic Search Premier.4. Before you can do anything you have to prove that you are a Florida Community College student.
Enter your Student ID (social security number) where it asks for "Borrower ID" - Then click on Submit.5. Connect to the database.
6. You should now be looking at the search screen.
In the "Search for" box, type in your search term - omit little words like of, the, an... just use the "meaty" wordsFor example
If you are looking for articles on "sexual harassment in the workplace"
try entering "sexual harassment workplace" or "sexual harassment employment" or "sexual harassment employees".
7. Click on "Search" and the database will return a list of results for you.8. Click on the title of an article to view the article
9. To print your article click on your computers print icon (or choose file and print if you prefer)
10. You are now the proud owner of a magazine article - go forth and be brilliant!
4. Finding magazine articles by using Custom Newspapers
Newspapers are another good source on articles in which an opinion is given and the Custom Newspaper database is an ideal resource. Custom Newspapers gathers articles from papers in the United States, Canada, Great Britain and Australia and offers them to our students in a full-text format. Searching Custom Newspapers is simple. Follow these directions.
1. Go to the PCC library website: www.polk.cc.fl.us/it/library/index.html
2. Click on Remote Access Databases. On the Remote Access Databases page you will find lots of information resources that are available to Florida's community college students.
3. Enter your Student ID (social security number) where it asks for "Borrower ID" - Then click on Submit.
4. Connect to the database.
5. Enter a search term in the query box.
6. Click on the Opinion and Editorial Section. Click the Search icon or,
7. If you would like to limit the newspapers searched, click on the Browse icon and check the list of available papers. Click on the words "Submit Selections" located in the blue margin. This will return you to the search screen and you can click on the Search Icon. (There is also an option for limiting the dates to be searched.)
8. From the Results List, select the article that seems most appropriate. Click on "Text and retrieval choices." Then read the article. If this is an article you would like, scroll to the bottom of the page for print and email options.
