Who are these people anyway?

Where to Begin?

1.Look at the list of fifty most important Floridians.

The Ledger maintains a website with the Top 50. The PCC Lakeland Campus Library also keeps a copy of the original newspaper insert. The insert is titled The 50 Most Important Floridians of the 20th Century. Click here for the library location. The library also has available the old issues of The Ledger from 1998 on cd-rom, if you would prefer using that format.

2. Many of the people in the 50 Most Important list are also listed in other biography resources.

American National Biography is available in the library as well as on the computers in the library. This Internet resource may be accessed only from the PCC libraries.

Click on the "Biography Resources" icon on the desktop to take you to Wilson Biographies Plus, another Internet resource available only at the PCC libraries.

A third option, available both at home and at the libraries is Biography Resource Center. Follow the directions in section 3 below to access this resource as well as Literature Resource Center (if you select a person who is an author).

3. Finding information in other resources.

1. Go to the PCC library website:
www.polk.cc.fl.us/it/library/index.html

2. Click on LINCC Electronic Resources.

3. On the LINCC Electronic Resources page you will find lots of information resources that are available to Florida's community college students. There are databases for lots of different things, not just articles, read the descriptions before you choose. For this assignment try Biography Resource Center or Literature Resource Center.

4. Before you can do anything you have to prove that you are a Florida Community College student.
Enter your Student ID (social security number) where it asks for "Borrower ID" - Then click on Submit.

5. Scroll down to Biography Resource Center (Click here for information about Biography Resource Center) and connect to the database.

6. You may wish to find magazine and newspaper articles about the your Top 50 person. Follow directions 1-4 above and then scroll down to FirstSearch. In the "Search for" box, type in your search term - the person's name.

7. Choose a database: Click on the pop up list below the "Search for" box and scroll down to the database you want.

Try WilsonSelectPlus for starters.
This is a "full text" resources.
All the articles can be printed from the database
and will include the information you need to cite your source.

8. Click on "Search" and the FirstSearch database will return a list of results for you

This is screen one of the results for a search of the WilsonSelectPlus Database for "teenage pregancy"

There were 126 records found.

The titles of the articles (Largest blue text) are linked to a short summary of the article.

Click on the blue "View HTML, Full Text" link to access the entire article.

9. To print your article

First click on the FirstSearch print icon to reformat the article
(makes it fit to the screen and print out neatly without cutting off words or doing other crazy things like that).
Next click on your computers print icon (or choose file and print if you prefer)

10. You are now the proud owner of a magazine article - go forth and be brilliant!

4. Other places to look for biographical information.

The Florida Handbook may have some useful information.

The Tampa Tribune is another possible resource. The Tribune is available online, by following the directions in #3 above and scrolling down to the Tampa Tribune.

The Biography Resource Guide on the Library Website may also provide some direction on locating furthur information.
