Getting Started...

Learn how one black journalist traced his family roots back to his (white) great-great-grandfather, who owned a plantation in Louisiana during the 19th century.

Neil Henry's article " We've Got America in Us" is on reserve for you at the Circulation Desk of the Winter Haven Campus Library.  You can read it in the library or make a copy of the article if you wish.

What direction do you want your paper to take?
What are some possible topics
you could explore?

Encyclopedia of Family Life

Specialized encyclopedias are especially good resources for "getting started"

The table of contents of the "Encyclopedia of Marriage and Family" has many interesting topics you might like to explore... and, of course, you'll find information about those topics within the volumes as well.

Topics here include:

  • Baby boomers
  • Birth order
  • Blended Families
  • Children's rights
  • Extended Families
  • Family Values
  • Home Schooling
  • Sexual revolution
  • Step families
  • ...and many many more!

LINCCWeb:
PCC's Online Catalog

Search the Online Catalog for possible subheadings using the "subject browse" function.

as well as  journal article citations.

Encyclopedia of Marriage and the Family

Concise 2 volume set - topics arranged alphabetically - includes bibliography for further research.

Naturally, you can begin with your own family...

What is unique, interesting... researchable???

Finding Books

Reference titles that may be of interest to you include:

You can find these books and others by using the basic title search.
Use the subject search to find more information on your topic.

The online catalog also searches for videos, art prints, journal titles, and CD's.

Periodicals (magazines, journals, newsletters...)
The PCC Library has many periodicals in print and stored on film.  Periodicals are shelved alphabetically by title.
Many other periodicals can be accessed electronically through the PCC Databases - ask your librarian for details.

Periodical Titles:

Databases - Finding Articles

The most efficient way to search for articles is to use one of the electronic databases or print indexes.

The library subscribes to many SPECIALIZED Databases (focus on one topic)
and GENERAL databases (good for a variety of subjects)

You can access many of the PCC databases through the library's web site: http://www.polk.edu/it/library/

Remote Access Databases (resources you can use from home)

General Databases (which may include articles and information on your topic)

Most Databases work similarly... Here is an example of the Academic Search Premier search page.

If you do not receive a list of results that satisfies your information need, please ask the librarian for assistance.

Finding Reliable Information on the Internet

Internet Search Tools
Search Engines
are indexing tools that search the Internet for occurrences of a specific word or phrase.
Directories
are searchable collections of sites that have been arranged by subject or concepts.
Meta Search Engines
search several search engines at the same time.

Remember:
Anyone can post information on the Internet.  Information on the Internet can be inaccurate, out of date, misleading or just plain wrong. Take time to critically evaluate web sites - or any information source - you use.
