Getting Started & Choosing a Topic

This assignment asks you to explore the prison system in the United States.  Mr. Ryan has provided you with a list of questions to initiate your investigation.  This class guide will assist you in locating information in the library, on databases located on the library website and on the Internet.

Get an overview of Prison Systems from the Encyclopedia Britannica
(Online Version or print)
The print version is in the Reference Section: REF AE5 .E363 1998
The online version is available through the PCC Remote Access Databases link.

From the online Encyclopedia Britannica:

penology

also called PENAL SCIENCE, the division of criminology that concerns itself with the philosophy and practice of society in its efforts to repress criminal activities. As the term signifies (from Latin poena, "pain," or "suffering"), penology has stood in the past and, for the most part, still stands for the policy of inflicting punishment on the offender as a consequence of his wrongdoing; but it may reasonably be extended to cover other policies, not punitive in character, such as probation, medical treatment, and education, aimed at the cure or rehabilitation of the offender; and this is, in fact, the accepted present sense of the term.

Other terms that you can use to locate information on the Prison System include:

There are "general" databases which are good for a variety of subjects and there are "specialized" databases that are good specific areas like nursing, the arts, science...

Try Academic Search Premier - it is a general database that provides "full text" access (a link to the actual article is provided) You can print articles, e-mail them to yourself or save them to a disk.

Some other databases you might like to try that also available through the Remote Access Databases link.

Criminal Justice Periodicals Index - Covers a wide variety of criminal justice topics, including corrections administration, law enforcement, social work, industrial security, drug rehabilitation, and criminal and family law. Full-text and image coverage for about 50 journals.

Issues and Controversies -- Offers a wealth of current topics research information, including pro/con discussions of hot issues, newspaper editorials, numerical snapshots of key topics, photos and graphics, and selected historical source documents.

Internet - Web Sites

You can find anything on the "Net" -  right?   Well... maybe not.

Be very choosy about resources you find on the Internet.
One of the great things about the Internet is that anyone - ANYONE - can post information to the Web -
your sister, my sister (very scary), Ph.D's, very talented pet...anyone.

How do you know what's good stuff and what's your next door neighbor's 4th grade science project?

Guess what? There are web pages for that too...
