Polk Community College Library
Development Services

Polk Community College Library Development Services consists of Collection Development, Acquisitions, Copy Cataloging, Original Cataloging, Processing, and Serials Control. Development Services is responsible for database management of the holdings for both campuses, gathering statistics and reporting on the status of its holdings.

Acquisitions

Acquisitions researches titles looking for complete bibliographic information and reviews. The Acquisitions Learning Resources Technician orders requested titles making decisions based on supplier and budgetary requirements. Once orders are received materials are inspected for completeness and condition, orders are updated and materials passed onto cataloging for processing.

Cataloging (Bibliographic Services) Services)

Bibliographic Services at PCC includes copy cataloging, original cataloging, database management for the holdings of the Winter Haven and Lakeland campuses, processing, conversion and editing of older records, statistics gathering and reporting and other tasks related to maintaining access to the collection.

Collection Development

Librarians and faculty review selection tools, research relevant topics, and recommend titles in order to plan and coordinate the development of print and non-print resources for the library. Librarians work with the faculty to support the programs of the college and to respond to changes in curricula with growing emphasis on distance education.

Media Preview/Ordering

Development Services orders video and other AV materials for preview upon request of faculty (see non-print request form). Development Services cannot accept responsibility for payment for preview or return of materials if the request does not originate in Development Services. All items ordered for purchase must be previewed first. Requests for purchase of materials must be approved by requester's division supervisor.

Processing

Processing includes preparation of materials for the shelves, processing materials being withdrawn from the collection, as well as, working cooperatively with Circulation to provide stack maintenance and inventory.

Serials Control

Serials Control handles all periodicals and serial publications. These include print, microfilm, microfiche, CDROM, and electroniccally delivered formats. Serials are checked-in and distributed to each campus library and other departments within Information Technology. The Serials Learning Resources Technician is responsible for updating files compiled to publicize PCC's periodical holdings and holding records on OCLC.

Binding Materials

Most periodical back files maintained by PCC are in microform format, but the library also binds some periodical titles to maintain the integrity of the volumes for future research. Also, when books are returned, or found, damaged these are examined by the library staff for potential repair or replacement. Books considered classics, or not easily replaced (either the cost is prohibitive or the title is unavailable from out-of-print and in-print sources), are set aside for binding.

Statistics

Statistics on acquisition, distribution and withdrawal of titles are maintained on a monthly and annual basis.  All these statistics are compiled in reports to the administration, accounting, CCLA, or other reporting agencies.
