COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT

Collection development is the process of selecting appropriate materials to support the curriculum and research of the students and faculty of Polk Community College. This may include books, periodicals, software (both on disk and CD-ROM), videos, and other non-print formats. Faculty members, students, and staff  are encouraged to actively contribute to this process. 

Selection and evaluation of materials include the following: 

Knowledge of the subject area

Knowledge of the curriculum plan

Knowledge of the current library holdings in the subject area

Reviews of materials in the subject area 

Recommendation by the faculty

 


Requesting materials for the library

Please submit suggestions for purchase by using a Materials Request Form or by emailing the Collection Development Librarian. The above mentioned form is available on the Library website.

Requesting Reconsideration of Materials 

If you have questions or concerns about specific materials in Polk Community College's library you may fill out a Request for Reconsideration  and submit this to the Collection Development Librarian.  


Donations and Gifts

Polk Community College appreciates donations of library materials and monetary gifts which enhance the holdings.  Donations are evaluated by the collection development staff using the same criteria for the selection of purchased materials. If you wish to make a donation of either materials or money to the libraries please contact the Director of Development Services at (863)297-1040. The library acknowledges donations in writing, but the donor is responsible for the appraisal of the materials for tax purposes.
