The medical transcriptionist is a key member of the
health care team and plays an integral role in
preparing the descriptive information of the patient’s
medical record which may include medical history,
diagnosis, treatment, physical examinations and
discharge summaries
This program is designed to
prepare the student for employment as medical
transcriptionists/medical language specialists in
healthcare facilities including hospitals, physician’s
offices, clinics, medical transcription companies or
as independent contractors. Medical Transcriptionists
with work experience may attain positions as Certified
Language Specialist, Quality Assurance
Specialist/Editor, Recruiter, Trainer, Transcription
Supervisor and Transcription Manager. Most of the
jobs in this area are home-based thereby making this
field desirable for those individual desiring flexible
work schedules
Students scoring below required levels on state
mandated placements tests in English, Reading and
Mathematics are required to enroll in and complete the
appropriate College Preparatory course(s) before
enrolling in some program requirement courses

CERTIFICATION EXAM
Graduate transcriptionists will be eligible to take
the national certification exam offered by the
American Association for Medical Transcription (AAMT)
to become a Registered Medical Transcriptionists (RMT).
The exam can be scheduled to take on-campus upon
completion of the Medical Transcription Practicum.
