Mr. Tew has
total of forty-three years criminal justice-related experience.
His experience includes two years as a military policeman,
twenty-nine years with the Lakeland Police Department, retiring
with the rank of major, and twelve-years with Florida Department
of Law Enforcement, retiring as a Senior Management Analyst II.
He holds an A.A. degree from Polk Community College, B.S. and
M.S. degrees from Rollins College. Mr. Tew currently serves in a
part-time capacity as the coordinator for the assessment and
selection of candidates applying for law enforcement and
corrections academy classes at the Institute of Public Safety.

Selection Center Process
Polk Community College's Kenneth C.
Thompson Institute of Public Safety is an approved
State of Florida selection center
that conforms to Florida State Statute requirements. The center
actively attracts, screens, and selects applicants for it's law
enforcement, corrections, and corrections probation academy
training programs.
Florida State
Statue 943 and Florida Administrative Code Rule 11B require that
applicants for all Florida Criminal Justice Standards and
Training criminal justice academy programs complete an in-depth
application, which includes a background investigation,
prior to their admission in any basic training course or
program.
Requirements and procedure for applying
to a criminal justice basic academy program through this
selection center are as follows:
* Must Pass a
Required Florida Basic Abilities Test.
This test is
required by Florida State Statute. It is administered at this
selection center on the first and third Wednesday of each month.
This test must be successfully passed before proceeding to the
next step.
* Complete an
Academy Application
Applicants must complete the application in it's entirety.
Directions tell the applicant what documents are to be completed
and turned in with the application.
The Institute of Public Safety has
implemented a new directions and requirements for completing the
application, effective January 1, 2006.

Complete a Physical Abilities Test (PAT)
Applicants must complete a
physical abilities test (PAT). This test is scheduled for
applicants AFTER the applications are completed and returned to
academy staff.
* Appear
Before an Oral Interview Board
The final step before
selections for the academy requires applicants to appear before
an formal academy oral interview board consisting of three (3)
members. Applicants will respond to a set of pre-determined
questions relating to the criminal justice field.

Selection of Applicants for Academy
The selection of applicants
for an academy will be based on graded scores from the Basic
Abilities Test, the Physical Abilities Test, and the Oral
Interview Board. There are 28 seats available for LE academies.
Agencies who have employed and sponsored applicants have first
priority on academy seats. Walk-in applicants compete for
the remaining seats.

Detention and State Corrections Academies
County Detention and State
Corrections academies are offered on an as-needed basic to to
agencies requesting an academy start-up.
Fees for Law
Enforcement Applicants
Payment of the
following fees are required of the applicant at this stage:

Basic Abilities Test...................45.00 (payable to PCC)
(2) Applicant Screening
Fee..........$100.00 (payable to PCC)
(3)Drug Screen and
Physical........Applicant is free to use own choice at
applicant's expense
(4)Criminal History
Check.............$57.00 (payable to PCC)
(5)Driving History
Check.............(small charge payable to Clerk of Court's
office by applicant)
