Course Descriptions, Credit Hours, and Prerequisites:


OST 1142C Microcomputer Keyboarding I

3 hrs., 3 credits.

Prerequisite: None. Students will learn how to operate the letter, figure, symbol, and service keys by touch and will build speed and accuracy on computer keyboards and 10-key keypad.

End-of-course requirements for a grade of C will be demonstration of the ability to type a minimum of 35 wpm alphabetic for 5 minutes with 5 or fewer errors and to key a minimum of 75 strokes per minute for 5 minutes with a minimum of 99% accuracy on a 10-key pad. Students may also complete requirements of OST 1143C and OST 2144C, to receive a total of nine credits.


OST 1143C Microcomputer Keyboarding II

3 hrs., 3 credits.

Prerequisite: OST 1142C or Placement Exemption. Students will build speed and accuracy on both the alphabetic and numeric keys and numeric speed and accuracy on the 10-key keypad.

End-of-course requirements for a grade of “C” will be a minimum of 45 wpm alphabetic for 5 minutes, minimum of 40 wpm alpha/numeric for 5 minutes with 5 or fewer errors and to key a minimum of 100 strokes per minute for 5 minutes with a minimum of 99% accuracy on a 10-key pad. Basic skills will be applied in formatting memos and business letters. Students may also complete requirements of OST 2144C, to receive a total of six credits.


OST 2144C Microcomputer Keyboarding III

3 hrs., 3 credits.

Prerequisite:  OST 1143C or placement exemption.  Students will build speed and accuracy on the alphabetic, numeric and symbol keys on the computer keyboard and numeric speed and accuracy on the 10-key pad.

End-of-course requirements for a grade of C will be demonstration of the ability to type a minimum of 55 wpm alphabetic for 5 minutes with 5 or fewer errors 50 wpm alpha/numeric for 5 minutes with 5 or fewer errors and to key a minimum of 125 strokes per minute for 5 minutes with a minimum of 99% accuracy on a 10-key keypad.

Course Objective(s): Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to operate by touch alphabetic, numeric, punctuation, symbol, and service keys on computer keyboards, including the 10-key keypad.

The Gordon Rule: This is not a Gordon Rule course.

Writing Requirement: There is no writing requirement for this course.

Student Help: The instructor is available to help during posted office hours, by appointment during other non-class hours, and via e-mail.  Students are encouraged to seek assistance from the instructor.  Tutorial help is available for some courses in the TLCC’s on both campuses.  The schedule for tutors is posted in the TLCC’s and available on the PCC Website (www.polk.edu). Students are encouraged to make use of the services of the tutors.

Withdrawal: Students may officially withdraw from a course(s) during any given term provided the appropriate policy and procedure is followed.  Following the conclusion of the Drop/Add period, the student may officially withdraw without penalty from any credit course provided the appropriate forms are submitted to Student Services no later than the deadline published in the term schedule booklet.  (The published deadline reflects the midpoint in the course based upon the course’s scheduled duration.)  It is the student’s responsibility to submit these withdrawal forms. Failure to do so may result in an “F” in the course.

Attendance: Attendance in class is essential Regular attendance is the student's responsibility. If a student has excessive absences (more than 3 hours), he/she may be dropped from the course with a "W" grade before the withdrawal date. After the withdrawal date, a student may receive an "F" grade for the course for excessive absences (more than 3 hours accumulated since the beginning of the term).

Work Missed: It is the student’s responsibility to arrange with the instructor to make up missed tests and/or assignments.  All assignments MUST be completed according to the due dates Late assignments are subject to a penalty.

Repeating a Course: Under the Forgiveness Policy, a student is allowed three attempts in any one college credit course: one initial enrollment and two repeats.  A course cannot be repeated unless the previously earned grade is a “D,” “F,” or “W.”  (See college catalog for details.)

PCC Standards: Students are responsible for their own work.  It is assumed that each student is honest and will abide by that standard.  However, in the event there is an indication or suspicion that there has been a case of cheating/plagiarism, the situation will be dealt with in accordance with published College policy.  Copies of this policy are available in Student Services offices.

Information Technology Access/Use Policy: All individuals who employ information technology resources provided by Polk Community College (this includes, but is not limited to, telephones, computers, the PCC local area and wide area networks, and the Internet) must use these resources for academic purposes only.  Use of these resources is a privilege, not a right. Methods of Instruction: Focused lectures and demonstrations; directed practice; instructor observation, analysis, and suggestions for improvement.

Grade Computation: Course grade is computed from grades for 3 versions of Keyboarding tests, 3 versions of 10-Key Keypad tests, and assignments students complete and turn in.  For OST 1143C and OST 2144C, there are alpha/numeric tests also.
