DISTRIBUTION OF COURSE GRADE:

Lecture Exams (5 @ 110 points each) ……………………....550 points total

Comprehensive Final Exam . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 150 points total

*Assignments/Lecture Participation ……………….. . . . . .   300 points total

                                                                                    1,000 points total

*This includes:  unannounced quizzes, in-class assignments, papers, presentations, and homework assignments.  NOTE:  These cannot be made up if missed!

METHOD OF INSTRUCTION

I lecture primarily using Power Point presentations.  The Power Point presentations are NOT your notes!!!  The presentations serve as an outline and highlight important concepts. They are also used as a visual aid (you do not want to see me draw!).  You should still take notes like you would in any other class.  The Power Point presentations are found on my website.  I highly suggest that you bring the Power Point assigned for that day (see Schedule) and the presentation for the following class period (you never know if we will get ahead!).

EXAMS

There will be five unit exams (see course schedule for the dates).  The tests will consist of fifty-five multiple choice questions worth 2 points/question.  Bring a pencil on tests days!!!!  Each test will have one or two bonus questions, which will be short answer and comprehensive.  You must attend the whole class period for the day in order to receive bonus points!  The final will consist of seventy-five multiple choice questions and is COMPREHENSIVE!!!  No test scores will be dropped!  Tests will not be curved due to the fact that there are many other opportunities to earn points.  NOTE: Students who miss an exam are expected to take an all essay exam at the earliest time possible to make up for the missed test.  Students may not make-up more than one missed exam without specific instructor approval.

OTHER ASSIGNMENTS

Quizzes

The purpose of quizzes is to entice you to come to class prepared. Quiz questions will be taken directly from the assigned reading for that day (see Schedule).  Quizzes will be short and easy if you have done the reading. Quizzes are UNANNOUNCED and may be given at anytime during any class. You will not be allowed to take the quiz if you are late for class. You will not be allowed to make up a quiz if you are absent, and you will not be allowed to take a quiz early. Come to class prepared; have a pencil out at the start of each class in anticipation of a quiz.

In-Class Assignments

In-class assignments are given to reinforce information presented in lecture, typically in the form of a case study. These assignments will be graded mostly as participatory; however, there may be a few exceptions to this general format. They CANNOT be made up if you are absent from class.

Homework

Some of the assignments may be given in class to be completed as “homework”.   Homework is due at the beginning of the specific due date. Assignments are to be turned in on or before the specific due date. Points will be deducted for late turn-in (10 percent off per day).  If you miss class the day that the homework is assigned, you will receive 10% off of the assignment.  In order to receive full credit on homework assignments, you MUST attend the full lecture period.

Papers

You will be assigned two papers in order to complete the course.  One topic will have to do with the history of health, medicine, or technology and the other paper will be on a current event in health, medicine, or technology.  The guidelines and expectations for both papers will be handed out at a later date.

Presentation

You will be required to do one group presentation at the end of the term.  More information will be provided at a later date.

SCHEDULE

The course schedule is included in a separate handout.  The lecture schedule is tentative and can be subject to change!  Lecture tests may be pushed back (typically not forward), from the scheduled date.

ATTENDANCE POLICY

You are expected to attend all lectures.  You are expected to stay for the whole class period (I have been known to give quizzes at the end of class periods)!  If you cannot attend lecture, it is your responsibility to contact me PRIOR to the class period.  If the absence is excused, you will be excused from the activity or quiz.  Excused absences include: a doctor’s note (for you or your child), a death, a school-sponsored event, or others deemed appropriate by the instructor.  Unexcused absences include:  going to the beach, a hangover, studying for another course, having to work, vacation, etc…

EXPECTATIONS

You are responsible for reading and understanding the review sections at the beginning of each chapter PRIOR to coming to class.  I will answer any questions regarding the review material at the beginning of class then will proceed to the topic at hand.  Failure to read and understand the review material may lead to not understanding the lecture material.  I highly recommend that you come to office hours if you do not understand the review section for the assigned reading.  NOTE:  Not every chapter has a review section at the beginning.

As mentioned above, you are expected to attend, participate, and stay for all lectures.

WITHDRAWAL

The withdrawal date is Wed Nov. 2nd.  It is YOUR responsibility to withdrawal from the course!!!!

DISRUPTION POLICY

I do NOT tolerate disruptions in the classroom.  Please ask me if you have a question in lecture, not your neighbor!  Both people then miss the next point being made and must then ask someone else…hence a nasty chain of many people talking!  If someone is disrupting others by talking in class, the student(s) will be asked to leave.  CELL PHONES MUST BE TURNED OFF PRIOR TO CLASS!!!!!!  I will deduct 10 points from the grade of the person’s cell phone that rings.

CONTACT INFORMATION

I am teaching on both campuses.  My phone number is for my LK office; I do not have a phone number in WH so this presents a problem with contacting me by telephone.  You can contact me by telephone, but be aware that I am not in my office everyday.  Therefore, the best way to contact me is via EMAIL.  I check my email frequently and will respond to you much more quickly than by phone!
