Sample Earth Science Projects

One of the requirements of the class is to do 6 projects. The projects consist of evaluations, maps, reports, and other 1 to 2 page activities that emphasize higher learning processes. Most of the projects will consist of evaluations that are essentially opinions papers. There is a general description of these below. Each assigned evaluation will have more explicit instructions specific to that evaluation. I may add projects during the semester. Remember that you need to do at least 6 of these. You can, however, do a seventh project in which case I will drop the lowest project grade. I recommend that you do not wait until the end of the semester to do the projects.

Evaluations

These are short, between 1 and 2 typed pages double spaced, papers on issues related to different areas of Earth Science. What I expect for each one will be spelled out when it is assigned. You should generally explain the situation, give options, and give you opinion of what should be done. There are no right or wrong answers, only good and bad arguments. Remember the bottom line is your opinion.

These should use correct English. If the English is unacceptable, it will be returned ungraded for repair before it will be accepted the next class period. (I do not expect English perfection, but it should read reasonably well.)

The font should be standard (Ariel, Times New Roman, etc.) and of reasonable size (10 or 12). The margins should be reasonable (0.8 to 1.2) on each side. The evaluation should have a title (along the lines of that given) along with your name, the date, and the section of my Earth Science classes that you are in (label it by the class time rather than section number).

Other Projects

The instructions for projects other than Evaluations with be given separately. Generally the basic directions (length, margins, font, font size, etc.) are the same as for Evaluations unless otherwise stated.

Sample Projects

Here are two projects that will be listed:

Evaluation - Artificial Levees and Flooding: Discuss the problem, possible solutions, and your choice.
Project - Plate Tectonic Map: This is the list of features that you must label and describe for this project.
