Dr. Freitag moved to Polk County with her husband and two children in November of 1988. Although she was interested in teaching, her career up to that point was heavily research-oriented. In 1989 she obtained a part-time research position at the University of South Florida Medical Center working in an Immunology laboratory. In 1990 she was asked to teach part-time at Valencia Community College in Orlando. Dr. Freitag explains how she juggled both positions. " Every Tuesday and Thursday I left my home in Lakeland at 6 AM… drove to Tampa to put in 8 hours of research, and then left USF at 4 PM to drive to Orlando to teach Microbiology. The class met from 6:30 to 9:50 PM. I returned to home to Lakeland well after 11 PM… Suffice it to say, I have a lot of experience driving on Interstate-4!!!" Soon afterwards Dr. Freitag decided to give up research to concentrate solely on teaching. She gained teaching experience by her willingness to teach part-time at Polk Community College, Hillsborough Community College, and Valencia Community College, although she never taught at all three at the same time! Dr. Freitag joined the Biology department at PCC as a full-time faculty member in August of 1994 and is happy that her commuting time has been shortened considerably.
