The
Biological Sciences department at Polk Community College has a rich history
of academic excellence in a diverse selection of courses. In 1964, Dr. Will
Selser at the University of Florida was contacted by PCC's first president Dr.
Fred Lenfesty. From this contact Dr. Selser, Roy Shake and Paul White were hired
as PCC's first Biological Sciences Department. By the time PCC moved from the
temporary facilities at the Bartow airbase to the current Winter Haven campus
several instructors had come and gone. Dr. Carl Gordon was made Department Head
and the other instructors included, Dr. Peggy McQueen Hawkinson, Joel Sloan,
Paul White and Gale Zelnick.
In the 35 or so years since the Winter
Haven campus opened many distinguished instructors who made significant contributions
have retired, move on to other projects or passed away. In addition, a Lakeland
campus was opened with 2 new labs bringing the department total to 6. Currently,
the Biological Sciences department has seven faculty teaching the 11
departmental courses.
Dr. William Caldecutt, Dr. Cindy Freitag, Dr. Michael Harrison, Alice Hollis, Joey Maier**, Mady Maldonado**, Jennifer Shaw and Dr. Deborah Sipes. **Lab manager.
The
PCC Biology department is proud to acknowledge the significant contributions
of our former faculty, they include: Ollie Anderson*, Al Belcher, Benny Bindschadler*,
